The best pistol for personal protection would be a hammerless snub nosed revolver in any decent size caliber say .38 and above.

A short barrel makes it hard for your assailant to grab the barrel without covering the end of it and putting themself in danger.

No hammer will also keep your assailant from grabbing and blocking the hammer from striking the firing pin.

A revolver instead of an auto because you want reliability.

In all likelihood when defending your life you will not need more than one shot anyways, so if you also want to carry it concealed I would recommend a 5 shot cylinder.
