Microsoft to Acquire Nokia

Well........... that's a game changer in keeping up with Google.

Quote:
Microsoft Corp on Tuesday said it will buy Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.44 billion euros ($7.2 billion).

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014 and it is subject to approval by Nokia's shareholders and regulatory approvals. Nokia partnered in 2011 with Microsoft and uses Microsoft's Windows software to run its mobile phones.

I just saw that - It strange to say 7.2 billion isn't a lot - But after the Verizon deal yesterday it sounds like a bargain...

Its not a surprise considering Nokia seemed to switch to the microsoft platform and worked with them.

But you have two problems.

1. Microsoft have been mobile for 20 or more years. I have had a windows ce machine years ago. It was ok, good for word processing and such. Also played mp3 files. But they never made a hit in the market.

Android and iphone are new yet made huge impacts. So I am not sure if they can re-invent themselves.

2. Nokia were business phones and trendy phones.

If I was Nokia I would be making pure bluetooth handsets that you can use with your big bulky smartphone. Ie rather than using a bluetooth headset or speaking direct into your smartphone, you use a slim, attractive nokia handset.

Probably wanted to stand out.

Plus they had there own platform.

But to be honest I do not see microsoft making an impact.

Lets face it, if your going to make an app, your first call is Android.

Nokia would have been better of being purchased by a chineas firm as they would have a good chance of lots of chinease customers which could have kick started Nokia in a different direction.

I think Microsoft sadly will just bump along trying to make its own smartphone and copy others.

Elop comes from Microsoft to head Nokia
Nokia starts to use Windows in the phones
Nokia goes to shit, market value goes down
Nokia gets sold to Microsoft at a bargain price
Elop goes back to Microsoft to possibly be the new CEO

Sounds legit.

Your realy paying for the Nokia technology.

They have worked on many ideas over the years.

I remeber nokia claiming that they would soon have phones like paper that would wrap around your arm. So somthing cool like that microsoft could bring to market.

That said one presumes microsoft purchased nokia for the phones, they may use nokia technology in such as the xbox and so on.

Nokia kept their innovation portfolio, I believe only the phone department was sold.

Anyways... it's not like it's game changing when you look at the numbers

Nokia just lost its edge when apple brought out its smartphone.

to be fair Psion also went the same way.

both Psion and nokia made 2 huge mistakes which cost them the market that android did not.

1. expensive softwear (android is free or just a few pounds/dollars).

2. expensive add ons. to buy a charger or anything for these was expensive. with andoide its just a usb charger.

Even nokia in most phones would not klet you plug a standered headphones in. you had to use thers. and often it was a different one for each nokia phone.

Psion was first one in the pda market - 1986.

I am a bit of a pda fan and over the years have bought many.

I got the Psion Series 3a which i loved.

I later got one of there more modern ones. It was great too.

Indeed it isn't. After 1½ year with iPhone 3GS and over 2 years with Samsung Galaxy S2 I bought my first WP - a Lumia 925 - a month ago as temporary phone until better ones hit the market. There are some things I hope to see improved in coming updates, but overall it is a very good phone and the Nokia apps are quite nice.

App selection is also not as bad as I had feared, but then again I never used 100s of apps.

I wouldn't mind to see something like this with quad-core, 1080p and 41MP camera in the future.

Two companies failing miserably in the mobile market, joining forces to fail even bigger. Microsoft doesn't like to do things small. Even failing.

Adroid is crap. I had an androin phone and hated it, but I thought it was because the hardware was lacking. Then I got a more powerful pad. I HATED my samsung note 10.1. Sold it.

It's like Linux.. ok, it can be "superior" but it's not that easy and you can fuck things up.
I don't know what the fuck I did with mine, but it was NOT "smooth" even though it was supposed to be the flagship model last year when I got it.

I actually prefer win8 over android any day.

Microsoft thinks that by controlling hardware and software they can be more like Apple. Haha, damn they're lame. Microsoft is the Mcdonalds of the computer world.
