Matt Cutts is on the record regarding the deprecation of PRESS RELEASE-based links. They should be nofollowed or else they will be deemed as spam. Nice list.

get as many one way backlinks as you can. Build your domain authority while outlinking to very few other sites from your main page. The more backlinks you have and the fewer outlinks, the easier your site should compete for rank.
