Edit: Those are usually quite expensive hand woven Persian carpets from countries like Afghanistan. They are not really made to walk on in the first place.

I don't get the wallpaper that predates the Russian Revolution. Russians are among the world's best graphic designers so it puzzles me how old fashioned and drab their apartments are decorated.
