It seems like the UK could be pulling out of the 2014 winter olympics in russia, due to the treament of those who are gay in russia.

Has there been any debate in the USA or any other country about this?

Really, does anyone care if Britain does pull out of the winter games? As a Brit I'm fully aware that the most successful Briton in those games was Eddy the Eagle - famous for finishing last.

How familiar are you with the LGBT movement in Russia?

I ask because if you really think that their activists don't have a big problem with the treatment of gay and lesbians citizens of that country then I'm guessing it isn't a topic you follow much.

I'm not even really sure in my own head how I feel about an Olympic boycott. The Russians would be idiots to arrest athletes for anything to do with being gay but, then again, it is Russia so who knows what will happen.

However, to say that the gay activists in Russia don't have as big a problem with the laws is really rather ridiculous. You might not be hearing from them but that is because they are in jail or have been beaten to the point of either not talking or being afraid to in public.

I've heard a few things about it:

Tuesday, Russia's lower house of parliament passed a law against the "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" (i.e. propaganda from "the gays").

The vote was of 436 in favor, 0 against. You could argue that the bill could have been more homophobic, since its original title was the law against "homosexual propaganda."

The law against "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations," which the bill's defenders defined as "relations not conducive to procreation," is a step in the right direction, I guess. But if you suspect the legislation will not be applied to heterosexual couples who cannot or choose not to have biological children of their own, you are correct.

The law imposes significant fines of up to $31,000 for providing information about the LGBT community to minors, holding gay pride events, speaking in defense of gay rights, or equating gay and heterosexual relationships. In a truly egalitarian and internationalist spirit, the bill applies to Russians and foreigners alike, as well as media organizations.

Applying the invaluable English-class lesson that it's better to show than tell, Russia not only passed homophobic legislation (telling) but engaged in homophobia in its violent response to the valiant few protesting the bill (showing).

Before the vote, some LGBT Russians staged a kiss-in to protest the bill. Some of the hundreds of Russians protesting in favor of the bill hurled eggs and other objects at them, sang Russian Orthodox songs, chanted "Moscow is not Sodom!" and beat the kissers. Okay, well there is your first mistake. Russia Today is a state funded propaganda tool. It can have some interesting feature stories put any 'real' news is rather questionable.

In the UK, my friends and myself made is bit of a tradition to turn on Russia Today at midnight on New Year's Eve to see their annual reporting of the threat to turn off gas to the Ukraine. Mainly because the way it would be slanted was so ridiculous to be entertaining.

I remember at least one journalist quitting because the Kremlin was telling him want to and not report.

So, using them as the compass of how the LGBT community in Russia feels about their government isn't the most accurate of samplings.

Also, you aren't going to see that many street protests by LGBT activists in Moscow because last year the government banned 'pride' events for the next 100 years.
