I wont bother to get into a big debate here but the more I learn about the USA the more I feel (everyday) its actually a less free place than even China. The freedoms are now are being taken away on the sly and regulation is eroding freedoms in other areas.

USA still remains the only country which imposes income tax based on citizenship (not based on residency).
It is now becoming very difficult for Americans to even open foreign bank accounts, since January this year.
The list goes on......

The flip side of it, a kind of win for the US is that it is being reported by washington post sources are now refusing to speak with their journalists or restricting heavily the manner in which they do so.

I do have a problem with the government looking into every type of communication, but I think its in the interest of protecting us. I'm not strangling kittens, dealing drugs or comitting murder so I[m not worried what they know. I'm not some paranoid fucker who thinks the government gives one shit about my daily activities. Do you really think Barack Obama is sitting around twirling his moustache and giving out orders to spy on every American because he gets off on it? They have a tough job trying to figure out who's going to be the next Boston Bomber -- let them have some avenue to predict it.

The real problem is that thousands of contractors in the NSA have top secret clearance. Didn't they think its possible some of them could have a problem with what's going on and blow the whistle?

He's not in Chinese territory doing this without Chinese cooperation - meaning they laid down some conditions and made some guarantees and maybe promises to him. This is basically a possible act of treason and a diplomatic nightmare and its not like the country he is in isn't all over his shit and doesn't have him squarely under control. These types of events of this magnitude do not happen as a matter of random occurrence and without the involvement on some level of the security services of the host country and government. And coincidentally it all comes after Obama going after the Chinese publicly for espionage.

You probably know this guy was a high school drop out working for the CIA then Bozeman as a consultant., i.e. hacker. Company he was working for is a private company. 70% of US intelligence is gathered by private companies. Bozeman was a company started in Israel and bought by Boeing. Many of the companies paid to gather intel for US are from Israel or have Israeli connections. It's an extremely lucrative business.

There is a proposal in the new treasonous immigration reform bill that will triple the size of the Border Patrol and create a border and internal defense command. Full implementation of a military field army working within us borders...targeting whoever...

if the government wants to spy on people they should at least let them know that they are being watched. i think snowden did the right thing. he sacrificed a lot of because he thought people deserved to know. its pretty noble what he did. oaths are meaningless.

In a way its good that people know about this - of course, it has very serious implications about freedoms. The fact of his transgression is clear but it looks like the majority thinks that what he did was in fact RIGHT as per the results of this vote (86% is a very clear majority). Maybe the majority are incapable of being objective?
