Having read all the books...I knew it was coming.

But the problem that the whole series is going to face is that the writer really jumps the shark as far as having any kind of focus.

What started off as a really good story of a "Game Of Thrones" ends up being a meandering tale with a dozen storylines in far-off places that are almost impossible to follow.

By the time I read the last book...almost every character that started the first book was either dead or impossibly embroiled thousands of miles away.

The whole idea of a war for the "Throne" is entirely gone and is replaced with a bunch of stupid storylines that go nowhere.

I'm thinking that the writer really needs to pull everything back together in the next book or else the whole thing is gonna crash down under it's own weight.

Sometimes I feel like there needs to be a Game of Thrones series for each storyline.

They left out a lot of the subtext. All the traditional reasons why it was not only treacherous but also a wrongful killing in many other ways. Thousands of years of tradition that no one should shed blood at a wedding, an absolute prohibition on harming anyone once they have eaten bread and salt in your castle. All the kinds of things that let warring people send delegations to make peace. Fray broke all of them, ruined his family name beyond this war and made it so no Fray will ever be trusted by anyone, no matter which side they are on now. Also the fact Rob was losing support as with Karstark, and now has been martyred by Fray was left much more vague than in the books.

The stuff with Osha and Bran is better on television than it was in the books, but the red wedding had so much more depth and power in the books than the television show could communicate.

There are more than a couple of authors who have commented on how after Storm of Swords (the current season on HBO) That George RR Martin only kept writing because his fans demanded it. You can really tell now that he doesnt give a shit about the series in his books. I also think he made it too complicated for himself which is part of the reason why it takes him forever to write. Its too bad really because the first 3 books were so epic. The latest book A Dance with Dragons was very hard to finish and while there were some good parts in it. You nailed it, most of it was just shit dragging on and not going anywhere.

There are 2 remaining books in this series and I am hoping they are done by 2030.

Really? Who do you see as the 'good people' and the 'evil people' in the story. You'll have a very hard time thinking of anyone in the books who is all good or all bad. Bolton's bastard is pretty evil all around for the sake of being evil. The rest have reasons for their actions or reasons for their twisted nature. As for being purely good, can you think of anyone in the books who would be purely good?

The bigger problem is expectations. He wrote the first few books in complete obscurity with no pressure to deliver. Now, if his next book isn't the most well-received piece of literature since The Bible it will be called a failure. He is in an unwinnable situation where his own success has become too high a bar for him to be measured against. People don't want a B+ or even an A+ from him... they want the best book that they have ever read, and then the next one has to be better than that.

I wish him luck... and I'll be reading them all, if he ever finishes them.

Not to worry, he has not even started that book that runs parallel to the last one you read.

But he was nice enough to write one called " The Musings if Tyron Lanaster" or something like that.

To quote Obie Wan - you will find a great deal of what you hold true will depend upon your point of view, Every house in GOT believes they are doing the right thing, well except maybe Geoffrey the little inbred mental case.

That seems to piss a lot of fans off for some reason.

Speaking of no one being safe, and tying loose ends together, etc.... just wait until Arya Stark gets a little older and completes the training she started in S1.

Oh just you folks wait.

Exactly...

Even Geoffrey thinks he is doing what's right... he just happens to be a sniveling warped douche bag - which makes sense when you consider his mother, the fact he is inbred and that he has never had to work for anything in his life...

I think it will be put on the Lanasters, given when the king of the north was stabbed , the attacker said that's where it came from.
Going back on an oath of marriage was a big thing too

Give it a bit...in the books, the war between the Lanisters and the Starks isn't even the focus anymore. Hell, there's hardly any of them left.

That's the frustration of the books...the whole thing started off with the King being best friends with Ned Stark and needing his help and was a pretty good setup and storyline with all the intrigue and incest, etc.

But in the books...that storyline was for NOTHING. None of it meant anything. And the "war" meant nothing. And most of the characters that he gets you invested in...mean nothing.

I'm not even sure that he has any idea in his mind where this whole story is going to go.

He's like a writer with ADD. lol

Well, I haven't read the books and I didn't know it was coming and it was very much a 'woah!' episode for me. Also, Michelle Fairley was consistently amazing as an actress on the show right up until the end.

The same is true of all human history.

At the end of WWII Hitler dies. Anyone 'watching events as if he was the protagonist' would be left to wonder wtf, this story isn't even about the Nazis, Germany, Hitler or the 3rd Reich at all... Similarly, there were people who thought the Medici family was the most important of all time... 'hardly any of them are left anymore and their squabbles which all seemed so important aren't even the focus of the story at all now.'

Martin has managed to craft a series of books without a protagonist. The story is not about any character, family, or particular battle. The fact that you assume Ned Stark is the protagonist, or that any one war is the most significant, doesn't change that. It is a history of a world and history is never as clean or perfectly wrapped up as one might want it to be. Humans have a very hard time accepting that their own small keyhole point of view is not the universal perspective.

I don't really care if the rest of the characters get killed...I mean.. the midget and the dragons alone are worth watching if the rest is already dead, of course it would be a little boring, but watchable...

my jaw dropped for sure last night. at this point i don't want to know what happens in the books because it would spoil my shock watching the show. hard to get attached to characters when no one is safe though.

Take it easy.

I haven't told you HOW she isn't "done" yet. That's what will surprise you.

But the way the writing has gone in the last book...none of it will matter anyway. lol

I assumed that was a possibility. If nothing else, her daughter knows that can be the case.

Man though, spoilers! lol, I know people read the books but many haven't and are taking the tv show as its own entity. Lets us find out as we find out. Just a general thing..not you particularly.

I'm thinking that the writer really needs to pull everything back together in the next book or else the whole thing is gonna crash down under it's own weight.
it's a new style of writing that's been developed over the past 10-15 years

The HBO series is pretty bad ass. I mean, they just stabbed a pregnant lady in the stomach on TV? That is some gangsta shit, and HBO will always push the envelope.

As for Martin and the book, people are rightfully concerned as to whether he will even live to complete the series. He's 65 and morbidly obese. Considering it takes him 3-5 years to write a book, there is a very real possibility that "the game" won't even be done before he dies. I wonder if he already has a writer penned if he dies.

As for the storyline, it is great, and it isn't all that complicated if you are a student of history. Martin is good, but he shamelessly steals from history, i.e., the War of the Roses. I mean, ever major event is basically a real life event that happen during the War of Roses, with slight variations. The princes in the tower, bastard kids trying to take the throne, and even the red wedding are all events that occurred during the War of Roses. Martin isn't really a "visionary" in that he simply converted Norman/British/Irish history into fiction (and added some dragons). I still enjoy the series though.

Daenarys is gonna win the throne IMHO -- Dragons FTW (only people who know are HBO and Martin). I think Stannis is gonna be close (he's my second favorite character, though he's pussy whipped). I also think Tyrion (my favorite) is gonna end up ruling Casterly Rock someday, which would rock.

And can't wait for Stoneheart. Be afraid. Be very afraid....

To bad Robert Baratheon got fat and died from a boar wound. He was a bad ass when he was young (against Rhaegar with his warhammer)

I actually enjoyed the latest book (Dance with Dragons). It deals a lot with the Dragon lady and there are a couple nice twists in there I'd love to see on the TV show. I also predict the Dragons are going to rule again, with the help of Tyrion. Stannis and the Red Witch versus the Dragons would also make for an interesting battle.

I'm sure he must at least have a storyboard made up for the last 2 books, probably just a case of filling in all the little details and making it more dramatic. I don't expect to see a new book for another few years though, he seems like a perfectionist and I don't think he minds keeping people waiting. It might end up the last 2 books come out as a movie though (I don't think the TV series will last that much longer, unfortunately).

Had to wait for iTunes to make it available here, even a few hours was too long, Twitter and the whole web went beserk.

I've read the books, the last two are rather awful and I'm not sure I want to invest any more time in them unless I know things improve.
