Man though, spoilers! lol, I know people read the books but many haven't and are taking the tv show as its own entity. Lets us find out as we find out. Just a general thing..not you particularly.

But the problem that the whole series is going to face is that the writer really jumps the shark as far as having any kind of focus.

What started off as a really good story of a "Game Of Thrones" ends up being a meandering tale with a dozen storylines in far-off places that are almost impossible to follow.

By the time I read the last book...almost every character that started the first book was either dead or impossibly embroiled thousands of miles away.

The whole idea of a war for the "Throne" is entirely gone and is replaced with a bunch of stupid storylines that go nowhere.

I'm thinking that the writer really needs to pull everything back together in the next book or else the whole thing is gonna crash down under it's own weight.

it's a new style of writing that's been developed over the past 10-15 years

The HBO series is pretty bad ass. I mean, they just stabbed a pregnant lady in the stomach on TV? That is some gangsta shit, and HBO will always push the envelope.

As for Martin and the book, people are rightfully concerned as to whether he will even live to complete the series. He's 65 and morbidly obese. Considering it takes him 3-5 years to write a book, there is a very real possibility that "the game" won't even be done before he dies. I wonder if he already has a writer penned if he dies.

As for the storyline, it is great, and it isn't all that complicated if you are a student of history. Martin is good, but he shamelessly steals from history, i.e., the War of the Roses. I mean, ever major event is basically a real life event that happen during the War of Roses, with slight variations. The princes in the tower, bastard kids trying to take the throne, and even the red wedding are all events that occurred during the War of Roses. Martin isn't really a "visionary" in that he simply converted Norman/British/Irish history into fiction (and added some dragons). I still enjoy the series though.

Daenarys is gonna win the throne IMHO -- Dragons FTW (only people who know are HBO and Martin). I think Stannis is gonna be close (he's my second favorite character, though he's pussy whipped). I also think Tyrion (my favorite) is gonna end up ruling Casterly Rock someday, which would rock.

And can't wait for Stoneheart. Be afraid. Be very afraid....

To bad Robert Baratheon got fat and died from a boar wound. He was a bad ass when he was young (against Rhaegar with his warhammer)

I actually enjoyed the latest book (Dance with Dragons). It deals a lot with the Dragon lady and there are a couple nice twists in there I'd love to see on the TV show. I also predict the Dragons are going to rule again, with the help of Tyrion. Stannis and the Red Witch versus the Dragons would also make for an interesting battle.

I'm sure he must at least have a storyboard made up for the last 2 books, probably just a case of filling in all the little details and making it more dramatic. I don't expect to see a new book for another few years though, he seems like a perfectionist and I don't think he minds keeping people waiting. It might end up the last 2 books come out as a movie though (I don't think the TV series will last that much longer, unfortunately).

Had to wait for iTunes to make it available here, even a few hours was too long, Twitter and the whole web went beserk.

I've read the books, the last two are rather awful and I'm not sure I want to invest any more time in them unless I know things improve.

Freaking crazy... not reading the books but loving the series!!!

Did not see this one coming at all :)

Grisey 06-04-2013 04:56 AM

Watched it last night, didn't see that coming at all. There is way to many stories going on now, its going to get boring...The whole thing was built on vengeance for ned stark... now you got 1 bastard son thats on the run, one son going fuck knows and 1 on some quest and now has super powers to control animals and people while being a cripple. 1 daughter married to a midget in love with his wifes maid and no idea what will happen to the daughter now i was so routing for her to get back to rob and her mum :( then i was routing for her to save the wolfe...again disappointed

Midget didn't even make it in last night episode.

I can see it going down hill fast from now on which is a shame.

Manfap 06-04-2013 04:59 AM

I havenīt watched any of them yet, should I book it or just get stuck in with the series?

I've read the books as well and enjoyed dropping hints to my mates about the death of Rob Stark.

Will be interesting to see how they do the next couple of books since they wander for sure.

And there is no ending yet - anyone know when the next book is due out?

That's the frustration of the books...the whole thing started off with the King being best friends with Ned Stark and needing his help and was a pretty good setup and storyline with all the intrigue and incest, etc.

But in the books...that storyline was for NOTHING. None of it meant anything. And the "war" meant nothing. And most of the characters that he gets you invested in...mean nothing.

I'm not even sure that he has any idea in his mind where this whole story is going to go.

He's like a writer with ADD. lol

I agree. I enjoyed but hated at the same time the first 3 and quit reading after the red wedding. What character was I supposed to care about that wasn't busy doing out of character things as clumsy plot devices.

Overall, not a very good writer. At the same time, some very good points shine through.

Robbie 06-04-2013 11:07 AM

Another problem the series is going to have are the young people in the story.

In the book...Rob Stark for instance is 15 years old. And he's the OLDEST of the bunch.

Obviously the series couldn't show a bunch of pubescent children having sex and so forth (the way it is in the books) because modern day society doesn't work like that.

So they got some "of age" actors to play the older Stark brothers...and some kids to play the other siblings.

But now...a few years have gone by in "real life". But in the storyline it's only a few months that have went by on the series.

And the "kids" are growing up FAST. Arya will have tits by next season! And young Bran is on the verge of growing a mustache! In the storyline...only a few months have passed...but Arya went from being a tiny, cute little girl to being a teenager in a matter of days! lol

If I were them I'd film the next 10 seasons NOW before the actors get any older.

What are they going to do with a bunch of grown up people playing the parts of small children (like Arya and Bran) if the series goes on another 3 or 4 years?

Martin has managed to craft a series of books without a protagonist. The story is not about any character, family, or particular battle. The fact that you assume Ned Stark is the protagonist, or that any one war is the most significant, doesn't change that. :

That's the mistake most people make. They get focused one one character, and then get upset when he/she dies. There is NO HERO in the story. Ned Stark was not a main character. He's a character whose death served as a catalyst for the entire series of books.

His death in not some choice to just kill off a character.

Validus 06-04-2013 12:52 PM

Yes, what a surprise. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by anything. That show is awesome. I thought it was going to be a slow episode, but then... BAM.

Each character is the main character... from their own point of view. Just the way the real world works where whoever is reading this thinks they are the protagonist and the story is all about them. :2 cents:

Sorry to piss in your cheerios, but I didn't post any spoilers. I made a couple of predictions that haven't happened on the TV show or in the books. That's why I said 'I predict.' Next time get your facts straight or learn to read before calling me a douchebag, you troll.

Great show and I love it - but the producers are fucking up letting the writer have free reign over the script - what makes a great book doesn't always make a great movie.

I dislike his character. I really do.

I like Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen.

Matyko 06-05-2013 04:36 AM

I haven't read the books, and the show is more or less OK. This entire scene was too rough, needless-to-show violence was fucking overdosed... Showing a pregnant chick getting stabbed in the stomach multiple times on TV is a NO-NO!!!!! :( So SCREW the producer and the director BIG TIME. Totally pointless... I have no problems w blood, cutting throats, squirting blood, etc [I love Tarantino anyway ;)] but no one ever can convince me it was necessary to kill that poor preggo THIS WAY... I dont fucking care what was in the book, but bringing this to TV was a huge mistake imo... This is way too tough for a ~'mainstream' TV show.. I am 34 and it shocked me.. what if 15-18 aged 'kids' especially girls see this? Crazzzzyyyy.... :(

Hey remember Bonanza, Lorne Green was 50 and his sons were all in their forties. lol I just started reading the first book and it did strike me how much younger everyone is and alot less sex than the TV show. What book should I go up to before he jumps the shark?
I can see if it keeps going on how they start to lose their focus. The whole beginning middle and end gets lost.
