Jean Stapleton RIP

One of the greatest television actresses, best known for her role as Edith Bunker on perhaps the best television show ever made.... Passed away today at age 90.

Amazing how many people alive today have never heard of or seen all in the family. What a great show it was.

RIP Edith

Wow thats too bad...

All in the Family wasn't just great. It was important, and it was also one of the funniest shows on TV, especially the first few seasons.

That show would still be timely today if it were new...but back then, it was REALLY controversial, and we ALL watched it....what would Archie say next?

I actually cried in the last episode. It was such a surprise. She was a great actress on a groundbreaking show.

LOL, you really don't know what you are talking about. Alf Garnett is one of the all-time great comedy creations and probably in the top five most recognisable British TV comedy characters. He is there alongside Basil Fawlty, Mr Mannering and Mr Humphries and Del Boy.

From Wikipedia ... "It is based on the British television comedy series Till Death Us Do Part. Despite being considerably softer in its approach than its BBC predecessor, the show broke ground in its depiction of issues previously considered unsuitable for U.S. network television comedy" did you notice the bold text I added just so you couldn't miss it?

I still have nightmares about the episode where a guy broke into their house to try to rape edith. It's right up there with the all time great different strokes episode where the maytag repair man tried to molest arnold.

Well sorry, no one over here knows or cares i guess. Out of all those you listed the only one i know is Mr Humphries. I guess british shows just don't do well over here because people can't relate to them in the same way.

You have never heard of Basil Fawlty? You'd be surprised just how many shows you watch are of British origin. the Office is on obvious one but what about Cosby? American Idol? Shameless? Sanford and Son? Dancing with the Stars? and loads and loads more.
You could well be right about people bit being able to relate to them as the Americanised versions of British shows are in the main pretty dreadful and do not stand up to the original (to a Brit), the same with American shows remade for us over here, 9 times out of ten they fail dreadfully.
I'm a big sitcom fan and have watch quite a few American shows and (again as a Brit) they just do not compare to ours, your style of writing is so different, you seem to have as many joke rammed in as possible even if the jokes are really weak while its not unusual for a British sitcom not to have anything funny happen for minutes at a time if it helps the plot along. I'd say the closest an American sitcom has gotten to the British style is Frasier.

That show helped to usher in an era of better understanding in the US. Her passing saddens me.
