I've got a DS413+ with 4 Western Digital RED-series disks(build for NAS: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810 ). It took a while to get the NTFS-rights working correctly. But now I love it, and it's the brand I recommend when people ask for NAS.
The administration is vastly better than Buffalo and most other pro/consumer models. |

We used a 1511 with WD Caviar Black's for years and it was great. Most things are migrated to our EMC pool now since we've got a pipe direct to the rack from our office, but the Synology still runs and gets used because it's just damn convenient.
That said, I'd take a serious look at commercially-supported FreeNAS and Openfiler builds. the iXsystems once that directly support FreeNAS are really nice and you'll have worlds more power if you want to do anything fancy. Another thing, stay away from the tiny consumer appliances that cram <5 drives directly against every heat source they can find. If there's not a little breathing room you're going to have a bad time. (Most <5 disk Synologys and other big brands have tons of complaints about this.)

Put a supermicro in a closet, and load it up? ![]() Two x 760W PSU and 15 lowprofile SATA disks, do you have any idea how much heat that produces?, and you compare that to a synology NAS that consumes 44W at max diskread?? |

disks use same amount of power no matter what they plugged into and generate the same amount of heat.

I have a QNAP TS-412 with 4x WD Red 2TB drives. Works like a charm. Doesn't make a lot of noice and has a low power consumption.

Anybody have options such as nClone where you can image entire systems in case of a meltdown and you can simply just restore the image? lmk |
