The explosives that killed three people and injured more than 170 during the Boston Marathon on Monday were most likely rudimentary devices made from ordinary kitchen pressure cookers, except they were rigged to shoot sharp bits of shrapnel into anyone within reach of their blast and maim them severely, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

The pressure cookers were filled with nails, ball bearings and black powder, and the devices were triggered by ?kitchen-type? egg timers, one official said.

The resulting explosions sent metal tearing through skin and muscle, destroying the lower limbs of some victims who had only shreds of tissue holding parts of their legs together when they arrived at the emergency room of Massachusetts General Hospital, doctors there said.

Law enforcement officials said the devices were probably hidden inside dark nylon duffel bags or backpacks and left on the street or sidewalk near the finish line. Forensic experts said that the design and components of the homemade devices were generic but that the marking ?6L,? indicating a six-liter container, could help identify a brand and manufacturer and possibly lead to information on the buyer.

The person or persons who did this are sick in the head. Hopefully they're caught soon, and punished accordingly. Death penalty if I had my way.

At this stage of an inquiry, officials said it was not unusual for there to be no suspects. But with the paucity of leads, Mr. DesLauriers and others pleaded with members of the public to submit any photographs or video they may have taken at the blast site to help in the investigation. At the briefing, Mr. DesLauriers said that someone somewhere almost certainly heard a mention of the marathon or the date of April 15.

?Someone knows who did this,? he said. ?Cooperation from the community will play a crucial role.?

Counterterrorism specialists said the authorities would aim to match the faces of any possible suspects, using facial recognition software, against an array of databases for visas, passports and drivers? licenses. ?It?s our intention to go through every frame of every video that we have to determine exactly who was in the area,? Edward Davis, the Boston police commissioner, said at the news briefing. ?This was probably one of the most well-photographed areas in the country yesterday.?

I have not heard of any drone strikes during the Boston Marathon. Only two bombs going off.

Well if you are not aware of the drone strike...you must be aware that the CIA and the FBI are responsible for this bombing...just as they have been in hundreds of other bombings in America. This is the inside scoop direct from Johnny boy...as provided by him in another post.

No one should have more than a 4 liter pressure cooker and far stricter registration of private pressure cooker sales.

No more than 4 nails or 3 ball bearing at a time should be allowed to be sold as well.

Other than retribution in equal measure I think the main reason for it is it ensures with zero uncertainty that the killer never gets the chance to kill again. Plus, put certain murderers in prison and they can often find ways to still kill people. They can get paroled and kill again.

What I find interesting is that people who vehemently stick up for keeping the worst murderers alive would to a person change their tune if it were their loved one, son, daughter, mother, sister etc, who was slaughtered so senselessly.

And I agree with others, you do have the mind of a child. No offense. :D

One thing these photos show us is that security and medical staff on duty at events are worthless if something goes down. They are just standing around. It is the regular people in the crowd that are applying tourniquets. In the first link the guy is applying a tourniquet before the smoke even clears. The woman in the blue shirt just lays there bleeding out (she died) while the nurse stands over her doing nothing. Then there is the guy with the cowboy hat that jumped in and helped out and put a tourniquet on also.

Several things in fact. Level an old building, blast a hole through a mountain, obliterate several square blocks or an entire city, gas everything in a forested area, cause a controlled avalanche, or carpet bomb an entire battlefield.

In this case the bombs were homemade and rigged to do one thing and one thing only, that being shred the flesh of as many people as possible.
