Other than retribution in equal measure I think the main reason for it is it ensures with zero uncertainty that the killer never gets the chance to kill again. Plus, put certain murderers in prison and they can often find ways to still kill people. They can get paroled and kill again.
What I find interesting is that people who vehemently stick up for keeping the worst murderers alive would to a person change their tune if it were their loved one, son, daughter, mother, sister etc, who was slaughtered so senselessly.
And I agree with others, you do have the mind of a child. No offense. :D
