possible to resore blacked out part of the photo (exif data etc)?

Photo taken by camera, then ms paint blacked out certain part.
Exif data viewers show only thumbnail and I have seen people restore it in full size. How?

Without being tedious to find some kind of old version or cache of the image either as a temp file or deleted/restored file and get lucky, it's probably stuck with the black.

Unless your OS has a previous versions that includes user files, like in Vista (Right click on the photo, select Properties, then click on the Previous Versions tab. On that tab if any previous versions exist they will be listed.)

Certain software used to (still does?) keep the original untouched photo as the EXIF thumbnail. AFAIK you can't restore it to full size and quality from that. But you could obviously try to enlarge the untouched EXIF thumbnail, if present.

If by some miracle it happens to still be open in paint, press ctrl+Z or find the undo button

I am sure that's not the case, but that's all I can think of

Also, if by chance you ever used any web browser to view it, I bet that it would be cached somewhere.

I also thought that some graphics editors created a temporary file while you're editing something and then delete it when you're done.. Maybe a file undeleter thing could help find it, if so

While editing a photo with MS paint, i accidentally saved over the original photo instead of saving it as a different file. I do not have any restore point on my computer, so things like shadow explorer won't work. Paint has recorded the date modified so i figure there has to be a way to undo that modification. is there any way to get that original copy back?
Note: i am using windows vista home basic.

I always thought saving OVER something made it unrecoverable, I know if you "delete" it then it's not really gone.. but these people said that they were able to recover a photograph they had saved over
