RIP Ayrton Senna

19 years ago today the greatest driver in the history of motorsports lost his life after crashing at the Tamburello corner during the San Marino Gran Prix.

Lest we not forget yesterday was the 19th anniversary of Roland Ratzenberger's death as well.

Godspeed to both of them.

the greatest there ever was and ever will be.

To you younger F-1 fans, my favorite driver when I was a kid was Jackie Stewart, who when asked why he was retiring said "I've done everything in this sport except die"

During some of his race seasons his chances of finishing the year alive were 1 in 3 ?? Fans too died at the races and they just kept racing as the bodies were cleared.

If you're a fan you must watch;

Grand Prix: The Killer Years ?.. http://vimeo.com/51735205

for sure different times back then... no helmets, no fire safe clothing, bad tires, bad brakes, no security at all of any kind

compared to that F1 nowadays is like Kindergarten but i dont think anyone wants to have the times back where people die every weekend

I watched the Senna documentary movie a few months ago. What a horrific weekend that was in motorsport.

Hopefully never repeated again...

anybody else been following the production of ron howard's rush, it looks fantastic:

A biography of Formula 1 champion driver Niki Lauda and the 1976 crash that almost claimed his life. Mere weeks after the accident, he got behind the wheel to challenge his rival, James Hunt.

will go and see that once it's out. Lauda is a cool dude, he's F1 expert on german TV but also owns his own airline. until a few years ago you could be lucky and he was greeting you when you got on the plane because to keep his license he had to fly regularly

Exactly...I have been a motorsports fan for many, MANY years...and back in 1981, I was shooting the 1st (and 2nd) launches of the Space Shuttle for media, at NASA. When I was picking up my creds, somehow there was confusion on J Stewart's creds...filed under his name, not the broadcasting company or whatever. So, I am standing there, trying to explain to the NASA dude, who the hell Jackie Stewart was, and this guy had no clue. :idiot:
I ultimately gave him a ride into the NASA facility, and had lunch, etc. Really cool guy, at least then.

Anyway, he basically said the same thing to me...and "I've done everything in this sport except die", has always stuck in my mind, when others have passed in racing.
Senna, Earnhardt, etc...

I remember the day clearly - I was racing myself at Oulton Park on the day he died - was tragic not just his loss but Roland Ratzenberger the day before. Thankfully motorsport is now much much safer as a result!!

if they kept the ban on ABS he would have been alive instead he trusted technology. The lift of the abs ban mean more were taking risks and relying on the car rather than their own skill sets.
