During some of his race seasons his chances of finishing the year alive were 1 in 3 …… Fans too died at the races and they just kept racing as the bodies were cleared.

Exactly...I have been a motorsports fan for many, MANY years...and back in 1981, I was shooting the 1st (and 2nd) launches of the Space Shuttle for media, at NASA. When I was picking up my creds, somehow there was confusion on J Stewart's creds...filed under his name, not the broadcasting company or whatever. So, I am standing there, trying to explain to the NASA dude, who the hell Jackie Stewart was, and this guy had no clue. :idiot:
I ultimately gave him a ride into the NASA facility, and had lunch, etc. Really cool guy, at least then.
Anyway, he basically said the same thing to me...and "I've done everything in this sport except die", has always stuck in my mind, when others have passed in racing.
Senna, Earnhardt, etc...
