Question for Marines

Recently someone a new friend has entered my social group who claims he is a former US Marine. He tells us he's served three tours of combat duty, and was in Recon. However, when I asked him what his MOS was he couldn't give me a number.... Seems like half of the former Marines I know claim they were in Recon. So I started to question him further he didn't seem to understand the difference between a PI Marine and a Hollywood Marine....

Am I right to be suspicious here? I mean, every Marine knows their MOS (0352, 8513) and every Marine knows the difference between PI and Hollywood, right?

What other questions can I ask him about the Marines that would verify my guess?

If I caught one of my friends spinning tall tales about going to college when they didn't, they wouldn't be my friend much longer.

As a former Marine, nothing pisses me off more than lying about being a Marine.

a boy around the valley tells people he was in seal team 6... I worked with a gaffer that was on seal team 6 once... you could see it in him... didn't really talk about it... another guy I used to know was a seal, he told me a few things... mainly they would train all the time so each guy knew the guys job and for work they usually went to down to south America and kidnapped people... this guy now rips off dealers with a gun, at their location...

Does he claim to be Force Recon or Battalion Recon?

you have a valid point there.

I'd catch people lying about going to university all the time, esp in Manitoba. They say they were going to 'business' school at the UofM, and until recently there was no 'business' school at the UofM, the program was called 'commerce', and no one I knew ever could call the commerce program 'business, cause the business program was the one from the community college and a joke and it was an insult to anyone in the commerce program to refer to their program as 'business'. Easy to route them out, I'd just ask, ahh you took a commerce degree? Those lying would usually say no, business. So i'd question further, CGA, CA? - they'd say no business. Then I'd ask what building this 'business' degree was headquartered in, at which point they would always get very frustrated and end the conversation. I get why it pisses you off, marines risk their life and train extensively to be called a marine. I spent 3 years and tens of thousands of dollars getting my degree, it pissed me off when some dropout thought he deserved the same recognition as someone who spent the time, money and effort to get a degree.

mind you, all the losers who aren't marines or ex marines or didn't actually get a degree but say they are or did would disagree... lol

As a veteran, I have total disdain for any wanna be that lies about their service.
Anyone that says they were Seal team 6 is probably lying, members of the UDT won't talk about it.

They should be taken out back and beaten by real vets.

Seems to me it is something that you would not forget. And if you did forget, it would be because you wanted to, which means you would not run around blabbing about being in the Marines.

I wouldn't hassle him too much around friends, you will just look like a jackass. The truth will come out at some point. Until then, stay away.

Those that do don't need to talk about it. They've done it. It's life. It's no big deal.

I honestly don't know enough about Recon (then or now) to ask such questions. I had some friends in Recon, but it was like Fight Club - they never ever discussed anything they did.

That's one question I'll ask.

the boy, definitely a lair, the gaffer... trust me he's not well balanced, even looks dangerous... he would not talk about it other than to say he was with the guy that writes books now, and he only said that one time. don't remember how it came up... ... the other guy, proven gun fighter. most people don't run around and take off armed drug dealer locations... he only told me a few things because we're friends and I asked... didn't go into any 'war drama' at all...

my daddy was UTD in WWII... didn't talk about it at all really, at least not to me... some Vietnam stories though... his brother was shot down over Germany in WWII, he would tell a few things about that once in a while. he did the whole death march in the dead of winter and the prison camp for 18 months...

% of the military that are snipers is probably .00000025%

I held a ribbon for the rifle, but in the Navy, they don't train like they do for UDT or Marines with small arms

yeah, I knew my uncle was a prisoner from my grandmother, so I asked him.... he didn't really go into any details... just mentioned a few things over the course of several years ...

my daddy joined the service, in WWII, when he was 16 with false ID... went to the pacific... never really mentioned that much and only a few episodes total from all his experiences... one from Vietnam and one from Turkey and one from Korea.... I have no idea what the fuck they were doing in Turkey but I have seen a few pics... and we did live in Gibraltar when I was a little kid...

my step daddy was an army medic in WWII... Germany... never said much about it... I've also spoken with guys from the army corps of engineers about building the roads and landing strips in the pacific

my uncle had nothing funny to say about being a prisoner in WWII. and really only said 2 or 3 things, but once he told me while they were in England getting ready for a mission, he was a gunner on a bomber, a guy on the crew sat down and figured out the odds of coming back on a piece of paper... looked at it and told the army to fuck off he wasn't going anymore... they took him away and my uncles plane got shot down

Reminds me of a guy I ran into one time years ago at a bar. He would always come in dressed in the firefighters uniform. He would always say he had just gotten off shift. Anyhow, hed walk around the bar like he was king shit because he was a so called "firefighter" then about a week later I had a package delivered to my house from UPS. Yup he was the delivery driver hahaha. His face dropped when he seen me open my door. Lol!

I was a sonar tech, listening to whales farting. I wish I still had those recordings.
We had our serious stuff, which when you think about how you're in a tin can several hundred feet deep in the ocean, well you get the picture

All the time we did on liberty, never wore a uniform except once, in Australia. Ended up being a good thing as all the women wanted to talk us and everyone wanted to buy us drinks. Always loved the Cracker Jack Uniform

I spent 3 years and tens of thousands of dollars getting my degree, it pissed me off when some dropout thought he deserved the same recognition as someone who spent the time, money and effort to get a degree.

mind you, all the losers who aren't marines or ex marines or didn't actually get a degree but say they are or did would disagree... lol

I'm offended by someone like you even writing "Marine"
Also, you didn't capitalize it.
Why I'm facing trial while people like you are roaming around free and easy is a damned mystery to me.

I don't know any Marines who go around bragging about anything. They'll show you what they are if they're made to, but bragging isn't really their thing. I haven't known many, but the ones I use to play cards with were some of the best human beings I've ever known. Any one of those guys could have killed me with one hand- yet- they paid me if I won, and treated me like a human being.

Usually I am very paranoid- especially if I play cards with a tough crowd- but in spite of them being some of the toughest guys I've ever met I never had to ever feel like taking a gun with me to that game. Not even once.

The one I dated was god damned amazing, she had amazing presence. . What a hell of a lover. One time when she was coming back to the states, she didn't seem like herself anymore and wouldn't talk much. We never saw much of each other after that I don't know if she met someone or if she had a bad experience somewhere or what

I'll tell you one thing- Marines have real honor, like all Americans use to. They don't need to brag to you or prove anything to you or anyone else. Treat them right and you got a friend for life- fuck with them and you better make a new hole in your ass so it'll be less painful when they do it for you (like a pilot hole before the screw goes in) because they do not fuck around.

I've never betrayed my country.

I've never bailed on anyone, not one god damned time, fucking EVER. The few people I have been close with know that I am the downest motherfucker fucking ever. No matter what we were facing no matter how scared I was no matter how inconvenient it was. No matter what the fuck, I'm the one who didn't sell out or cave in or run away when someone needed me. Period.

I may be left sitting on my balls with fucking nothing but by god I stood tall right by the side of anyone I have ever cared about. There wasn't a potential risk or loss or firearm or organization or ANYTHING that EVER stopped me from being loyal to anyone.

Since I ended up FUCKED you can laugh at that or look down on me but I don't give a fuck. I will continue to be what I am. Am I bitter that cocksuckers forgot about me the second I fell off? Cocksuckers that I had their backs when they got caught up? A little. But I don't get bitter, I get better. Fuck all them motherfuckers.

PS: Laugh all you want. There's NOBODY I would trade places with. No matter who you are or what you have. I may be COMPLETELY FUCKED IN EVERY IMAGINABLE WAY and I may HATE WHERE I AM IN LIFE but I LOVE BEING ME and I LIKE WHAT I AM. You don't matter, all those fleas with no honor don't matter, nothing matters but THAT.

If he said "recon", the only possibility is either regimental or division. There is no more "Force" recon, as it is now all MARSOC. And he didn't give you an 03 designation, so he's full of shit.

0311 94-98 1st Batt 5th Marines
0321 98-03 2nd Recon

I joined at 17, They asked how I felt about submarines. I asked when is the last time one sank?

My daughter joined when she was 18 and served on board the USS Ronald Reagan. She is out now, 3rd year of college, going to be a doctor.

My dad was a Navy man, My step dad was a Marine.

I can never be a marine, I'm Canadian.

I considered enrolling in the Canadian military when i was in high school senior year. A recruitment officer came to my school, a couple people signed up. He told me I wasn't in shape, this was in the gym where he had a booth set up to talk to us. So I challenged him to sprints. He accepted, thinking he'd blow me away. I played a LOT of basketball though, it was bad. I destroyed him, not even close. Then I asked what he benched, he said 220. I was doing over 300 at the time. So I asked him how a panzie like him got in, he said in a cocky asshole way my body fat index was too high. So in front of everyone I said fuck you panzie, and if you challenge that fight me right here or walk away a coward. He left and ended his recruitment. Even my gym teacher was proud of me that day. Never thought about joining the military again. I was in shape but still heavy in high school, played basketball and was in the weight room every day. Not fat like I am now though.

After I got my degree I applied to the RCMP, and they had a physical test course. To get in you had to do it in a certain time, and then a higher standard for when you graduated if you got accepted. They bragged about how hard it was at the graduate level, first attempt I passed at above the graduate level, the only guy doing the test that day who did. I asked about my BMI, they said they didn't care, pass the test was all that mattered, they liked that I was bigger, more weight to throw around. They weren't hiring any white males at that time though, so i didn't get in. Got a letter from them 2 years later asking me to re-apply as I was the type of candidate they were looking for then and were finally hiring, but I had moved on. I suppose the RCMP is a branch of the Canadian military though.....

I have beaten the crap out of several people in the Canadian military who were mouthing off in my college days though, not that that says much.....and did scare some Yankees in the American army out of a bar in Canada once but they weren't marines, they sure could run when I called them on their claims of beating me up. You'd think 3 on 1 they'd have at least tried........

the marines I've known weren't pansies though, the ones I know I actually respect. You can tell just by the way a guy carries himself if he's a man or not.

To all those who have served in the military, thank you for your service!!!!!!!!!

Some of you might want to see if there's a Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) group nearby; check out www.PatriotGuard.org (see photos at bottom of that page). You don't need to be a motorcycle rider to participate -- I drive my Prius when our group is escorting deceased military personnel. Membership is free, and participation in "missions" is voluntary. This past week we welcomed home Marines returning to their San Diego bases from Afghanistan; escorted the remains of a USAF veteran from the mortuary to her burial service, and site; and, participated in the full military honors memorial service for a Navy Seal who perished in a recent training mission.
