Why do humans like music?

I don't really buy the womb heartbeat story, there has to be a better theory out there...

Not sure why, but music is emotion, I think it's just the feeling of what music does to people. It can make you sad, happy, go completely crazy etc.

Yahoo answers says:

From what I've read, scientists speculate that music has had an intrinsic place in humanity for thousands of years. They think it may even have existed before speech. Then there's the fact that listening to music stimulates many parts of the brain at once, and that memorizing something to a rhythm and pitch helps you remember it better...
People like music for a lot of different reasons. Like other art forms, it makes people feel emotion, see things in a different way, or connect to something on a different level. No one really knows exactly why it can be so powerful.
I guess that just like not everyone likes other art forms, like painting, not everyone likes music. But it's just one of many ways that people express themselves.

Dopamine-release.

The next question is, why does dopamine get released when we hear music?

If you look at it from a String theory/quantum mechanics/general relativity point of view, it might be because music is vibrations, and vibrations stimulate every atom in our body. If the soundwave somehow compliment the wave-function of your braincell, it would affect the state of the braincell.

That is why you go braindead if you listen to Justin Bieber.

I think that's over-thinking it.

For hundreds of thousands of years humanity had nothing to do during long dark nights other than stare into a fire.

So at some point somebody imitated animals they heard during the day, birds they heard sing to pass time, then others joined in and bang you got the first band. Those first musicians got laid like mad, begetting the first groupies and music was born.

Because music takes our minds off the deep pain of being aware that we will die, and that someday the earth will be swallowed by a black hole, destroying the memory of humans and everything we've ever "accomplished".

To find the answer to that you may have to first ask yourself this; What would the world be like without music?

The answer to that may very well lead you to answering your question as to why humans like it so much.

No, although I agree with the bit about Justina.

Music is a meta-language. We only use 15% of what we can with our language. Written language has done that to a certain extent. Musical notation has given us some of the possibilities back.

It is also a way to tell stories together. There are numerous pictures of people singing together thousands of years ago.

There are theories that neanderthals used tone for speaking.

Yeah. That video of the water reacting to different frequencies is about the closest example I can think of as to why we tap our feet, nod our head, all the way up to dancing, or feel different emotions dependant on beat/rhythm/vocals/etc when we hear music on the 'frequency' that we personally like.

deep part ----> because everything is energy vibrating at a frequency
