I mean, I love the rock of the 60's and 70's...but the 90's. Man....the fucking 90's!!!

On the Ron and Fez show on SiriusXM a few weeks ago they were talking about how the 90's really was the last golden age of rock music. You have Nirvana that kicked it off and actually put the nail in the coffin of the hair metal era, and then bands like Alice in Chains, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Weezer, Tool, Foo Fighters, White Zombie, and a shit ton others all made their bones in the '90's. Some people might go the bullshit sub genre route and try to classify some of these bands as grunge, alternative, or even metal, but as far as I'm concerned these are all just damn good rock bands...

Mmmmmmmmmmmm.................

Each ten-year period starting in 1946 to date was a good decade for Rock'n Roll.

:2 cents:

I'm with you to a point. I love some grunge. The best thing about it, IMO, it is killed off all those fucking miserable, cookie-cutter, tranny hair bands. Most were marginally talented at best, and the subject matter and lyrics to their songs were totally assclown.

The thing is, the airwaves then got saturated with miserable junkies moaning about one depressing thing or another. Total doom & gloom for a decade.

Way better than mainstream 80s rock, tho.

Eeeewww. To me, the 80s meant glam metal garbage and power ballads, and most of the cool rock bands from the 70s sold out in the 80s and swapped guitars for keyboards. :disgust

But it's a very subjective thing...

For me it's probably very late 70's to late 80's. Would include most of my favorites such as Rush, Rem, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Ozzy (with Randy Rhoads). I also like some of the grunge era bands a lot though, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots come to mind the most.

Well, one thing's for sure...concerts were a lot cheaper back then. :1orglaugh

Yeah, there are so many. I forgot Rush, too. I was never a huge fan, personally, but they had a distinctive sound, and were huge in the 70s.

Jesus what a fucking blast that show must have been. Talk about getting more than your moneys worth.

There are good bands these days, but they are lost in the clutter and difficult to find. The days where everyone in the USA was listening to the same album are obviously long gone.

I have Little Black Submarines by the Black Keys on repeat a lot, a good example of a great modern band.

Deep purple 70-74, 84. Rainbow 75-78

And that's half the problem these days. Classic rock bands still release new material, it's just getting more difficult to hear it amongst the diversity out there. Most classic rock stations I listen to merely play the same old classic stuff from the 70s/80s and seldom debut any newer material.

I usually resort to YouTube to learn about newer releases and try to find a few gold nuggets amongst the junk.

I'd say 91-01, but mainly due to preference (I like alternative and that covers just about all the best years of my favorite rock bands). I'd say a more true answer would probably be mid 60s to early-mid 70s.

xxxjay 03-11-2013 11:26 PM

1983-1992

Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, early black metal, thrash etc...metal never really had another banner year after 1992.

the fucker who coined the phrazes "rock ballad" and "hair bands" should be stoned to death. This is when the corporations finally killed rock music. There has been a lot of good bands and good shit come out after this, but the pure amount of good music was traded for gimmicks and MTV.

Speaking of which I saw a documentary of The Band a few weeks back that made me very nostalgic for that period of music. Anyone else catch that, was fantastic.
