Best 10 year period for rock music?

I don't mean a specific decade, I mean a 10 year period. Also, I'm referring to the rock genre overall, not arguing for some particular band or against other bad music during the same period.

    For me it's 1968 to 1978.

The number of fantastic and innovative rock bands that have been subsequently copied and derived from is just overwhelming.

    For example:
    AC/DC
    Led Zeppilen
    Black Sabbath
    Rush
    Doors
    U2
    Dire Straits
    Santana
    Eric Clapton
    Fleetwood Mac
    Iggy Pop
    Jethro Tull
    Journey
    Judas Priest
    Allman Brothers
    Bad Company
    Joy Division
    Eagles
    Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Moody Blues
    New York Dolls
    Peter Frampton
    Pink Floyd
    The Police
    Queen
    Ramones
    ZZtop
    CCR
    Scorpions
    Doobie Brothers
    Steve Miller Band
    Thin Lizzy
    U2
    Van Halen
    Yes
    Jimmy Hendrix
    Cream
    Iron Butterfly
    Beach Boys
    Jeff Beck
    Beatles
    Genesis
    The Who
    Blind Faith
    Rolling stones
    Velvet Underground
    etc.......

I have to go with '77 to '87. A lot of my favorite bands (arguably) released much of their best stuff (at least IMO) during that era.

I'd narrow it down even further to '81-'85...Van Halen, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, AC/DC all released their most commercially successful albums (dependin' on your tastes in music of course).

          I'd say, 1987-97

          Nirvana
          Foo Fighters
          Stone Temple Pilots
          Sound Garden
          Cracker
          Dokken
          Def Leppard

          Etc.

Personally I'm a huge fan of many rock eras from over the last 55 years.

However... the best 10 years hands down IMO would be '64 - '74. More experimental stuff came out of that time frame than any other time.

All decades of Rock built on previous decades, they are all less meaningful on their own, except the current decade which seems meaningless in general.

For all of us it depends on our youth... sperbonzo says 1968 to 1978, and I think most of the music in the 1970s was pure crap - lots of disco and utterly gay music. At the very same time, I love the 1980s bubble gum pop crap and that's just another kind of gayness. Younger people will tell me that the 1990s or the 2000s were best for music, yet while I listen to modern day music / top 40 I can't name a band during that twenty year period I like.

                    My personal favorites are...

Journey. Very first day of high school, very first class.... Was music appreciation. Our music teacher knew Jonathan Cain, and had him come in and play Don't Stop Believin' for us. It blew me out of the water.

I also like Dave Matthews Band, U2, Bruce Springsteen...

Like I said, I'm not arguing about the crap music, there is tons of it every year, and the 1968 to 1978 period had PLENTY. I'm just talking about the amount of great rock.

Yes I'm a music snob... but if you don't include at least part of the 60s in your 10 years, regardless of your age, then there is no hope for you LOL.

                                    Rock is Great

For once we agree on something.
Unfortunately my hard disk crashed taking all my Rock & all my Blues.
So I'm stuck with my GF playing the radio station that plays the same rotation of 10 songs around the clock.

Open to suggestions for a Maxtor 1.5 TB (reality 2 X 750GB) Mac recovery

By the way. Alvin Lee, of 10 Years After, died the other day. Saw him live. Of all the concerts I saw, nobody put out as much energy as he did. Master of the feedback. 10 minutes after the concert we were still trying to leave our seats, his guitar was still humming.

I have to agree with sperbonzo, that time was the best time for rock, regardless of the 80s that were very good as well. But those 10 years were just incredible. And I'd add to the list Motörhead and Aerosmith.

The last 20 years have been awful, I think that after Rage Against The Machine got separated, there has been hardly any good band. Probably Queens of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters and perhaps The Strokes but that's it.

I'm 48 - and my 19yr old daughter likes much of the classic rock (mostly 80s) that I grew up with. I recall a few years back she sported an AC/DC t-shirt one summer. She knows every track from Back in Black.

Granted, she also listens to some of the current sludge - but at least she likes stuff like Van Halen, etc.

As for me - although I like classic hard rock (and country)...I also enjoy stuff like old musicals (Rogers & Hammerstein 'Carousel') - way before my time. But, like my daughter, it's stuff my parents had around the house in the early days.

                                                      For me it's 1968 to 1978.

The number of fantastic and innovative rock bands that have been subsequently copied and derived from is just overwhelming.

                                                      For example:
                                                      AC/DC

The last 20 years have been awful, I think that after Rage Against The Machine got separated, there has been hardly any good band. Probably Queens of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters and perhaps The Strokes but that's it.

You have Nirvana that kicked it off and actually put the nail in the coffin of the hair metal era, and then bands like Alice in Chains, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Weezer, Tool, Foo Fighters, White Zombie, and a shit ton others all made their bones in the '90's. Some people might go the bullshit sub genre route and try to classify some of these bands as grunge, alternative, or even metal, but as far as I'm concerned these are all just damn good rock bands...

The best thing about it, IMO, it is killed off all those fucking miserable, cookie-cutter, tranny hair bands. Most were marginally talented at best, and the subject matter and lyrics to their songs were totally assclown.

The thing is, the airwaves then got saturated with miserable junkies moaning about one depressing thing or another. Total doom & gloom for a decade.

Would include most of my favorites such as Rush, Rem, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Ozzy (with Randy Rhoads). I also like some of the grunge era bands a lot though, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots come to mind the most.
