when you talk to colleagues do you not speak in your native language? Shouldn't that be a must when it comes to things like MEDICAL CARE? Hate to think someone could get the wrong dosage because of a fucking translation problem...

For sure there is, but they only seem to concentrate on language. It's so strange.

I've had to take my Mom to the Hospital a few times and fortunately they've all been able to speak English to her. I go for checkups once a year and Dentists twice a year and they've all talked English too so at LEAST this isn't a problem.

In all of the bars and restaurants I've also never hit a problem. Most everyone is french but speaks English. It's business and it of course pays them to speak English or as many languages as possible.

Where I get french-only is in McDonalds or Tim Hortons. Get this : On Saturday I stopped for lunch at Tim Hortons. The girl behind the cash refused to talk to me in English. She understood what I was saying, but couldn't be bothered. I switched to speaking in my best french possible to show I would at least try, but she didn't even bother.

The manager noticed.

To make matters worse, she dropped a lunch tray and proceeded to serve my lunch on it without getting me a new one. The manager noticed again, and took over for her serving me my lunch. When I sat down the manager was taking the cashier to the back room. Hopefully to give her shit.

nurses and doctors speaking french to each other isn't a problem. the problem we experienced was the doctors and nurses didn't know a number of medical terms in english, so this caused them to avoid mentioning certain things to the patient or going into the same detail they would have had they been able to speak french to her. some nurses didn't speak english at all though.

these days i think if you are going to live in quebec, its in your best interest to learn french fluently. in her day it was very different in Hull. school was english, many more english families lived there. thats not the case today.

Who gives a fuck what Ukraine did, they are almost like Russians except their look, this kind of cultural policing makes you look like an ideot, but nothing more.

i m coming from a society that is thought of rediculous nationalism in schools, even some people proud of things that wrest of the world actually doesn't even care about, see what happend now, youngsters don't give a damn shit about so called traditional values anymore and they are right.

in fact i would love to born in a society which hadn't a deep historical background such as United states, since then nobody would try forcing me an identity of any kind.

to conclude, Cultural haritage is my ass, we are human beings, we created that culture and no doudt it has to be changed according to our changing needs.

Ok, in that particular case i agree that it could be a problem, and you dont want to have understanding issue at the hospital

But in a other day, or doc or hospital maybe you will have be fine... and most of peoples rarely goes in hospital in their lives

So ya, in few case like that its a problem, but for the day to day living i think it would rarely happen..

Not really, they are doing it at the moment... they put of lot of laws to for it and it help for sure,, they always help/encourage ( hum well "force" will be the proper word ) immigrant to learn french, especially for kids and school and its not too bad becuase if they dont do it, they will maybe never learn and stay more isolated. Again, sometimes theres some overstatement

Yes but its french culture, what defines a culture, i think the language is pretty important even more when your the only one around speaking it... so it have to be highly connected, it leads to french music, french literature etc etc

Encore une fois, un débat sans fin !!

Bonne soirée

Lol!! Fortunately, most people in Montreal are not like this asshole. What's he doing at the end, crying like the little bitch that he is? Oh well. This guy has probably just realized that his options for the future are severely limited. I've met only one guy like this and I just felt sorry for him.

MTL is a great city, Québec est "la belle province" some people rage because they still have Canadian Passports, Currency & Transfer Payments. Maybe not so bad.

Montréal houses many fine universities including a few English language based.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._Canada#Quebec

An attempt to eradicate English will not be tolerated, but people speaking English also have to be mindful of the concerted attempt to keep the French charm, mystique and beauty of Québec.

the best thing you can do to erase a culture is FORCE it on people by the government

keep it going, the french language in Canada will disappear in a generation or two.

I think if the Quebecers want to legislate the french language then they should also speak the French language.. Growing up in Ontario we had french classes. I took them all the way through high school. Got stuck in Trois Riviers and had a huge communication problem. Not sure if it was the slang or dialect, but my French seemed to fail me.

Coming back from Qwebec Expo last year, on my way to the Airport, I had a cab driver from Algeria. He spoke no English, but communication was basic but understandable.

We Canadians are a funny bunch, we use different ethnic words for different things, we measure in both Metric and Imperial, and there are many cities in Canada where I would argue that English is not the predominant language. Times they are a changin.
