How big of a tip to leave

Saw this on yahoo.
Guy orders 85 pizzas and leaves a $10 dollar tip.
I think $50 would have been appropriate.
Too little? Too much?

Office pizza day we get 12-14 XL pizzas, we tip the guy $30. I'd say $10 on 85 pizzas is pretty shitty.

I usually tip $7-$8 for 1 pizza, plus they usually get all or part of delivery charge. So I would say $10 for 85 pizzas should receive a "Nigga Please" response.

PREFACE: I worked in the restaurant industry, I know how it is...

Tip is OPTIONAL, be lucky I was nice enough to tip, let alone bitch because I didn't tip enough... Want to be paid for your work? Complain to your boss about a raise or start a petition to change laws so restaurant owners are required to pay all employees minimum wage... Don't start pushing extra costs onto me.

I am normally a good tipper, there's many times I tip MORE then the cost of my item... But if you're gonna bitch at me about how much I tip, you're not gonna get a tip then, nor the future.

When I worked at a business where we bought a lot of pizza for employees, we had a policy where we were to tip $1 a pie for deliveries of pizza. We often got 40-50 at a time, and while that is a $40-50 tip, those delivery guys always made sure our orders were right and on time.

You get amazingly good customer service in Japan. While everything is expensive, there is no tipping...

Quote:
Be careful not to tip in a restaurants in Japan, it could be construed as an insult.

The general ideology is that the wait staff works for the restaurant as a team and if a customer enjoys their visit that they will return to the restaurant again, refer others and bring more business. I guess you could say, your gratitude and repeat business is all the tip they need.

Exception: I have been to some restaurants in Tokyo who received a lot of tourists and understood that some foreigners tip. In these rare cases, tipping is accepted but not expected.

This brings about an interesting question. So lets say the industry changed. They did away with all tipping and the restaurant owners raised the wages of the servers so that they were equal to what they were making before with average tips. You know that cost is going to get passed on to you the customer.

Assume the average meal at this place is $20. Which would you rather have?

A. Your meal is $20 and you tip the server whatever you want based on how good you felt the server was so assume you tip 20% your meal would be $24.

B. There are no tips and your meal just costs $24 and you hope you get good service and if you don't your only means of showing your dissatisfaction is to complain.

To me, in the end, you are going to pay for the tip one way or another. Personally, I would like to have some control over it.

In any other business you get a discount for buying so much. But in the restaurant business they expect you to pay extra. Pretty retarded if you ask me.

Depends on the situation. It is a business, so money creates loyalty.

5-10% (whatever it takes to round up the bill) on delivery and 10-20% on bars / restaurants that have great service and you are planning to come back.

People being so cheap it really pays off, especially on bars around here.

If someone buys a 5 year membership for your site would you:
A: expect him to tip you 20%
B: give him a 20% discount

In most other countries having a paid per hour employee works just fine.
The tipping culture is the US is completely retarded and NOT an example of how it should work.

Ok $10 was shitty for that many pizzas but for ordering delivery I don't tip much unless It's easy, like food is $17, I slip them a 20 etc, I usually only order 1 meal though. If in a restaurant I do ~10%.

The thing here in Sweden is that the servers and delivery guys/gals have pretty decent wages so they never really expect tip but are ofc glad when they get.
Average delivery guy I'd say is a bit over $30k per year here.

For delivery i tip 1 Euro.
Probably more than they get from most orders.
Sometimes i don't even get the chance to tip them. I usually pay upfront via internet and when they arrive they quickly hand me the food and jump back on their scooter before i can give them a tip. They don't expect you to tip them.

It's interesting to read the different thoughts on this.
In reality if the delivery person made an extra $50 for likely less than an hours worth of work,he did very well that night.

And to the people that say the tipping culture in the US is effed up.. I agree completely. It is.

i always tip between 15-20% at a restaurant but pizza delivery would be a bit much.. A flat rate based on the service would be fair.. but 10 bucks? 50 sounds about right to me.

they say 219

I would give $150. delivering 85 pizzas I think would be a ball breaker. You have to load 85 pies in the car and once you get there make whatever amount of trips to get them to the customer. If Im spending $1400 for pizza an extra $150 shouldnt break me.
I worked for tips so I know how it can suck. They get it to me hot, fast and right and Im happy. They dont even have to smile.

Disagree with you there.

In the UK at least, there is an utterly SHIT service industry. No one cares, they are all on min wage and service, generally, is shit.

In the US, whenever I've been, service has been wonderful, because they are working for the tip. Especially at bars. If I drop a nice tip on the first round of drinks, that bartender is looking to see when my glass is approaching empty and is over exactly when he should be asking me if I need anything else.

You get what you pay for, I guess.

I think $50 would have been appropriate.

Yahoo Tip Article
its called a tip there is no regulation for it.

Tip (gratuity), a voluntary additional payment made for services rendered
