Media Did NOT Tell You About This Shooting, Did It?

By the way, the Topeka, Kansas shooter who killed two Topeka Police Officers was ALSO a Native American!

"PORTERVILLE, California ? The church bell that rings to announce the deaths of tribal members on the Tule River Indian Reservation in California tolled repeatedly after a man went on a shooting rampage that left a daughter, his mother and her two brothers dead. The suspect died in a shootout with police.

Authorities cornered Hector Celaya, 31, on a country road Sunday about six hours after the Saturday night shootings, which left two of his other children wounded.

Authorities said Celaya was fatally wounded by deputies after he opened fire on them.

In the car with him were two daughters, 8-year-old Alyssa and 5-year-old Linea. One had life-threatening injuries; the other did not.

By Sunday night, authorities confirmed that Alyssa died of her injuries. Police said Celaya had a tattoo of her name on his right leg.

Authorities have not disclosed what motivated Celaya to kill his relatives, who lived on a family compound on the reservation of about 800 people. But tribal members said the former custodian at the reservation's casino had a troubled past.

"He had a real hard life," said Rhoda Hunter, the tribal council secretary. "But all of us do, we all have a hard time. But we try not to let it get the best of us."

Hunter said Celaya's mother was a friend. The Tulare County sheriff's department, which is investigating the case, identified her as 60-year-old Irene Celaya.

The killings stunned the tight-knit tribal community.

The remote reservation relies on the Eagle Mountain Casino for revenues. Each tribal member receives $500 a month, but Hunter said most of the profit is invested into educational programs for the children.

The emergency call came to the reservation's fire department at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, said Shelby Charley Jr., an engineer and supervisor. He said his crew, which most often attends to people who fall ill at the casino, was shocked by the carnage.

"This is one of those calls that will stick with you for the rest of your life," Charley said.

Charley said his crew immediately discovered a woman and man dead of gunshot wounds, then quickly discovered a young boy with critical wounds.

Minutes later, sheriff's deputies found a third body in an outbuilding that had been set up as a makeshift bedroom. Authorities said the bodies of Irene Celaya and her 61-year-old brother Francisco Moreno were found in the trailer. The body of their 53-year-old brother, Bernard Franco, was in the shed.

The wounded boy was identified as Celaya's 6-year-old son, Andrew.

Deputies found Celaya by tracking his cellphone. A chase ensued. He eventually pulled over in a rural area deep in the heart of citrus country. Celaya opened fire, prompting deputies to return fire, sheriff's spokeswoman Chris Douglass said.

She did not say how many shots were fired, but said Celaya fired his gun "multiple times." Celaya was shot during the exchange of gunfire, Douglass said. He died hours later at a hospital.

It was unclear when Celaya shot his daughters, Douglass said.

Police said Celaya was "known to law enforcement" and "known to use drugs," though Douglass could not provide details."

Somebody in China or something cut up 30 kids or something that same day too. It didn't happen in the US so I guess it doesn't matter to put on the news.

Yes, Fox did but did you see it on any of the OTHER networks?

Were tearful relatives shown?

60 Minutes do a segment?

But NO!

I hate to say it, but murder usually only makes a lot of national news when white people die. And white kids.... shit. It will be on every station for days on end.

What you wrote.

I do not mean in any way to diminish the extent of the tragedy which is presently in front of the public but let's get real here............

A few months back there was a story in the local news where I live about a guy who shot his wife and two kids then was shot by police (it was likely suicide via cop).

Four people were dead. I didn't see that make the headlines anywhere but here. I would guess in just about every major city in this country stuff like this happens on a fairly regular basis. If all the national news did was report about people shooting their family members that would be all the news ever consisted of.

While both are tragedies and involved children being murdered, you have to admit that the story of a guy committing one of the largest mass killings in the history of this country is a little bit of a bigger story right?

Bigger story but the core of the truth is ignored.

The guy was CRAZY!

Get it?

CRAZY?

CRAZY?

And so was the guy in my town who killed his wife and kids and so likey was the the guy who killed three people at Texas A&M university back in August.

This kind of stuff happens all the time. It is not reported on a national scale for a couple of reasons. As I said above if they reported every shooting by a crazy person that would be all the news would consist of. If all they reported on was terrible acts of violence the news would be so depressing that nobody would watch it.

I do agree that there is a bias in many ways. A cute white girl goes missing in Aruba (Natalee Holloway) it makes news because it is a better story for the mass audience than if an average looking black or Asian girl goes missing. Casey Anthony's story made headlines because of that picture of her daughter. That picture shows that little girl to be the most adorable thing you have ever seen so it made the tragedy all the worse and they reported it. But women kill their kids all the time across this country.

The national media picks and chooses its stories based on many things including how much time they have to report these type of stories so they pick and choose the stories that will make the best story and get them the most viewers. They aren't trying to subvert information about other stories, they are just making a business decision.

One last thing. When you put the guy from your stories name into Google there are many stories about it including stuff done by other national news companies like USA Today.

these instances are family / domestic violence - it happens all the time all over the world.
but the violence is mostly confined to the near family; kids + wife type of scenario.
yes still ugly and brutal but just not in the same category as a mass murder of 20 school children.

On a national scale? Absolutely! If you can't see that you are allowing your argument or dislike for the media to blind you.

Can you honestly say that a guy killing his family then being killed, as tragic as it is, has the the same social impact on the country as a guy going into a school and killing 20 people?

I'm sure you could find many multiple shootings from every day that are not reported.

Did not say that.

Social impact was not what I asked about.

Social impact is a product of the biased media.

Small killings are not good for revenues.

Were the killings to which I referred less tragic?

Are you suggesting that because only a few people were killed that these situations should be ignored and diminished?

To some degree I will agree that the media has affect on the amount of social impact a story has. In this particular case, however, the school shooting has a much bigger social impact even if both stories got equal air time. The reason is the circumstances surrounding it. Most typical people who have kids never in a million years would take a gun and shoot them. The idea of that is unfathomable to them and so therefor there is no connection to the story where the guy killed his family. However, most parents also send their kids to school so the idea of someone shooting them while they are in school and you being helpless to stop it has a much larger impact. The average person can look at the family shooting and say, "I would never do that." They look at the school shooting and say, "I hope that never happens to me and how can I prevent it."

I agree and already stated so above. If they reported this kind of thing every time it happened it would be all that the news ever reported.

Yes and No. Yes, it is less tragic. Call me crazy, but I see five dead people as less tragic than 20 dead people especially when you consider the circumstances. Should the story with the fewer people be ignored? No. Is it? No. It just isn't a national story.

Answer me this: If you turned on CNN or whatever national news channel you liked and 80% of what they covered were killings from around the country every single day how often would you watch the news? Big news stations tackle the stories they feel their viewers want to see and the leave other stuff up to other outlets.

It happened in China. And nobody was killed. Kinda different.

You're not suggest our media is "anti-gun", are you? If it were, we'd have had gun control long ago.
