Is Pirating About To Reach A Whole New Level

Was watching the BBC click program on 3D printing and because people can now buy 3D printers for as little as £900 and download blueprints from the net the worry is that copyright infringement on things like disney figurines could be very easly copied and sold as originals.

Will this turn into a whole new level of piracy ?

Quality on the home printers sill sucks and printing materials are too expensive for someone to be selling knockoff figurines..

You can buy a 3D printer for as little as £900 now and they will get cheaper over time as will the materials, It would be very easy for somebody to print all manor of items and sell them over the net or at car boot sales, markets ect

There is allready a shop in Manhatten selling home 3D printers

MakerBot Industries, best known for its small 3D printers, has opened a shop in Manhattan through which it will aim to sell the joys of home fabrication to the general public.

The store opening comes as MakerBot releases the second incarnation of its Replicator 3D printer.

The Replicator 2.0 works to much finer resolutions than earlier versions and can fabricate much bigger objects.

Yea, it'll be another 5-10 years before consumer products can match the quality of industrial equipment but you can always just send your designs here and have it made for you.

You can buy an AR-15 lower receiver for less than $100. You can shoot a .22 with the cap of a pen. You can shoot a shotgun shell with a metal tube and a nail.

Making plastic gun parts with a printer won't matter much.

Already been done. Wasn't even fully destroyed when it was fired, but the key is that it got off the round.

Certain parts for it, yup!

My Arduino controls the x, y, z right now, and I haven't quite figured out how to replicate the Arduino itself yet (but I'm working on it, just gotta get some more time).

So pirate Chinese manufacturers will start making knock-offs of all the Disney figurines that are already made in China? Somehow, I don't feel too sorry for Disney, or crApple for that matter.

They aren't making their stuff in China because it's the only way they can be profitable. They are doing it because this way they make the most profit.

its going to be a few years, but yup that will be the next wave for sure. The printers are currently not that great. They only work with a few materials.

On something like this

Does the pros of this technology outway the cons?

In my mind yeah, it would be nice to print some of the parts for my car or missing pieces of various appliances around the house.

Furthermore, on the issue of piracy, I suspect the market will find a way, the system will adapt to this "brave new world".

3d printers are the first step towards replicators (star trek style lol)

with a good mechanical printer you would not need to buy anything ever again you should simply make it or the parts for it and then assemble it...it would be the end of economy...

Sometimes I find little plastic parts on the floor. As soon as I get tired of it sitting around and throw it away I realize what it came off of. I'm excited to print those things off.

I'd make some crazy hot wheels tracks and a new bong with one.
I want multicolor support and feature size to be a bit better before I buy one, though, especially if they can combine regular plastic with transparent with variable mixes and possible metal support..
