What if in soccer they got 7 points for one goal? In football there is what, say 2 to 4 touch downs in a game? In soccer there is around 2-4 or so goals scored, difference being they only get awarded 1 point/goal. Its pretty similar when it comes to actually goals or touchdowns in a game.

1. In football you run and rip someone to the ground and then do a happy dance. In soccer you run and slide and hit someone in the shin guard? And then help them up?

2. In football you use brute strength to throw a ball 85-yards for six points. In soccer you use your whole body strength to kick a ball 85 yards for a slight chance at one point.

3 In football when you score you run around and head-but each other and chest bump each other, because its awesome. In soccer when you score a point you high five each other and only head-but when your angry.

4. Football is the No.1 contact sport, soccer is No. 2.

5. More people watch football in America then soccer and that's, because we suck at soccer and are amazing at football.
what soccer games are you watching where they high five each other? I don't know if I've ever seen that.. I'm pretty sure that is a north american thing. I'm also pretty sure nobody can throw a football 85 yards...

Actually the US is well known for dominating women's soccer in the 90s, making a star out of Mia Hamm, who I think won two World Cups, and Gold in Atlanta. We're still one of the top teams in the world today.

As for popularity, it's already one of the most popular participation sports in the US, at least for kids.

Most soccer players are build like women so it makes sense that the US women's team is dominating because we dont let women play football. That is for men in the US. Soccer in the US is for the guys who couldnt make the football team or parents would let them play because it is too rough and women.

I'm from the UK so 'soccer' is in my blood, been chelsea for 30 years. I do like to watch NFL, it's a good sport, but I can't watch it due to the advertising, it totally ruins it, I don't know how it ever got so bad regardless of the amount of cash it brings in.

soccer is the real Futbal...Football should be called handball and the ball spends more time in hands that feet.

The major difference between NFL and soccer is in the viewing experience.

If NFL were British it would be comparable to rugby. The sport is not alien to our culture but the viewing experience is. I expect it's the same for soccer in America. Liberals in Seattle might get it, because they're looking for alternative cultures, but rednecks in Texas might take a bit more persuading.

The main issue I have with NFL, and American sports in general, is that they don't allow for creativity or genius. If Messi was American, what sport would he play?

Okay so maybe a quarterback could do this with his hands. But the artistry doesn't matter in American sports.

Real Football will never get that popular in the US because of the lack of Commercial, US sports were created around commercials.

that shit is just too funny;

Football for me, and I mean real Football

Call it Soccer all you want, when there is not an "S" in the world governing body FIFA, it should probably tell you something. It's not called FISA for a reason .

Anyway, I think the NFL/CFL is pretty good, I prefer Rugby Union anyday over the NFL though and the CFL is obviously the underdog of the NFL.

I prefer watching highlights of both the NFL/CFL than watching an entire game. I think the only time I managed to watch a whole NFL game was a Patriots game a couple years ago when I was in Boston.

Highlights of the NFL and CFL show all that is good about the game, but all the stopping and starting gets on my nerves!

Other sports, since people seem to be adding them in

NBA I only like to watch when it means something (The Playoffs).
Same for NHL unless it is one of the big rivalries like Chicago / Vancouver for example I'll watch. Or Philly / Boston etc.

I hate the time out bs and all the adverts, drives me nuts.

Actually, I played Linebacker and Running back. However, as I got older everyone got bigger but me so i quit football because I was too small (only 135 - 140) and I stuck with wrestling (who doesnt like rolling around with another man all sweaty in spandex!?!?). This is one of the reasons why I like football because not everyone can be 6+ feet tall and 200+lbs vs soccer anyone can play. Soccer really has no physical limit...just comes down to skill.

To each his own.....i guess.

Having this new PVR has made all the difference for me in terms of watching NFL games. I now just zip past all the commercials with one click, and can even fast forward from play to play if the commentators are getting too yappy (which they often do).

I watch the odd soccer game but regularly catch the highlights of a lot of matches. When it's world cup time I never miss a match. Like others have said I too have played both, and love to watch both. So yes it is possible for a N American to be a fan of both.

Great point Bryan.. no pun intended.

I've always thought about this too.. a big complaint against soccer is the low scoring. But like you said there's few actual scoring moments in football.. same with hockey and baseball, many games in both sports end with 2-3 score lines.

As for basketball, well.. let's expand the court size to 100 yards and then we'll see if we still have 100 point games.

People who like sports for the scoring are the kind of people whose amps go up to 11.

People have been predicting the breakthrough of soccer in the US for decades. And after the success of the women's team and hosting a World Cup, where are we? Still hiring past their best mercenaries like David Beckham, a failed idea over 30 years ago, when we brought over Pele, Carlos Alberto, et al.

Outside of girls and kids, soccer is really nowhere, and American (male) players are in general vastly inferior to Europeans and South Americans. And you better hope that continues, because that graphic you posted shows exactly what will happen to soccer if it ever did gain any real traction in the US.

Such a dumb argument. I grew up watching both at various times. It's purely a question of personal taste, and also if you develope an affinity for a particular team in a particular sport, then you tend to enjoy that sport much more. If you don't care who wins, it's just not fun to watch.

Soccer is painfully boring, just a bunch of guys kicking a ball back and fourth and nothing ever happens other then they randomly fall down pretending to be injured. The only reason it exists in the us is for paranoid mothers who won't let their delicate little boys play the sports they could get injured in. They should pipe that shit into prison tv's 24/7 and cut the repeat offenders in half. I find it comparable to dropping a chunk of steel into salt water and watching it rust. If there were 2 channels on tv, one had soccer, the other was the home shopping network my ass would be parked there watching women talk about how wonderful the bead collection they are trying to sell me is.

I think you are high. I've never in my life had anyone try to talk to me about a soccer game, I've never even in my life overheard other people discussing anything about soccer. I've never even seen it playing in a bar. It's about as popular as competitive knitting. If europe wants to have a sport the US would eat up, bring back fucking jousting, but the soccer twinks running around a field aimlessly chasing a ball.. worthless.

Can't agree with that. Xavi and Iniesta have a lot to do with Messi's play at Barca. With Argentina he's won nothing. not even a Copa America. in a great team that includes Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuaín, Carlos Tevez, Di Maria... running with the ball at his feet he is the best but even in recent years when it comes to influencing a game I would put Zidane ahead and when it comes to pure creativity Ronaldinho.

I love to watch Messi but he has to do it at a world cup like Maradona did for him to overtake Maradona in my opinion. Maradona single handedly (no pun intended) took Argentina to victory in Mexico 86. He was out of this world with his level of play.

Messi could certainly do it. He does now finally seem to be bringing his club form to the Argentinian side. Maybe 2014 will be his world cup to do it.

For the rest of the World outside of America it's the number 1 sport. Not bad considering "nothing happens"...

One year later he broke the other one.

a lot less knocks in soccer but a lot of broken bones, knees, ankles.

I can name 4 players from Arsenal alone that broke their leg in the past couple years.

the only sport for me that is even somewhat watchable is hockey but i don't like watching any sports really or all the bs of cheerleading that goes along with it. its not your team. you did nothing that assisted a team in winning. i don't get that mentality.

That's what you get for watching the Lions.

Xavi and Iniesta are incredible, you are correct and that is the reason Spain are the incredible team they are, but you can't attribute that to how great Messi is. Ok maybe he isn't the best ever yet but he is 24 years old. He has 3, potentially 4 World Cups left in him, this kid will go down as the best player to ever play the game.

Ronaldhino was a great player but how long did he play at the very very top for? He went the way of many Brazilian players, made their money and lost their hunger to be the best.

Living in North America I'm getting more and more into NFL every game I watch, it's a great sport. However, it will never replace Soccer for me. The Soccer game is end to end, attacking, flowing skillful play. The Lions game has been on 12 mins and no one has moved 10 yards yet. I've saw more commercials than game time at this point. Soccer is uninterupted for the entire 45 mins of each half.

Do the hardcore NFL fans really give soccer a chance?
Hardcore NFL fans get only an average of 11 minutes played in a game...now tell me if this is a sport.

Actual Play Time of Super Bowl XLIV

Total of 12 mins 38 secs.

Real Football:

BTW , NFL is so fucking lame and boring, they play 10 seconds, stop 5 mins, play 20 seconds, and stop 4 mins.. who can like that kind of "sport".. its so fucking boring.

PAIRIOD.
A few things you and others fail to understand:

American Football is very different from Rugby. If you play American Football, at a pro or college level without pads, you would get your head cracked. You would probably die.

Pads are for protection, but also for hitting. To say it's for cowards only shows you know shit about it.

The reason why the sport stops and starts so much is because it is a "by play" sport. Understand this concept and you might understand the game.

5 years in Barca more with AC Milan won the WC, Copa America, Champions League, Liga, Seria..don't know why he is underrated in the UK.

Skills wise he is untouchable, even Barca fans agree:

If he does he probably will go down as the best, but next World Cup he'll already be 27 though, hasn't happened yet

Please there are a ridiculous amount of pauses in soccer matches, too. Not to mention bullshit calls by corrupt referees. It's a sport that does not advance technologically (maybe that's why makes it so popular), where corruption is rampant, players throw themselves are the ground constantly to try to deceive the refs. There are no commercials but your favorite team always has to wear some bullshit brand on their shirt. So instead of Chelsea on the shirt your team looks like it's called Samsung.

It's a beautiful sport, I like watching some games, but it can be pretty boring too. Like someone else said, it really depends if you have a team to root for.... that changes everything.

Anyone, including a rugby player with full pads, going against a pro linebacker will land on his ass.

He was great yeah but he had 6 or 7 years at the top of the game. Messi is in his 9th season with Barcelona. I rate Messi already better than Ronaldhino, far better infact!

It's all a matter of opinion. More disciplined all round player no doubt like I said in my original post I rate Ronaldinho the best ever only for pure skill, for the rest (in recent years) Zidane by a hair, until Messi wins something important that is
