Mitt Romney wrote the piece in 2008, and it had that title. "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/op...mney.html?_r=0

Not exactly a lie.

Not exactly a lie.
What Romney said in that piece however was correct , and what Obama ended up doing was to reward inefficiency. So lets see how long GM is able to compete using overpaid US workers competing against better trained and lower paid workers from Korea , Japan and China.

The big problem is in those countries they all have gov health care so we cant compete because they don't have that massive expense to deal with. If he let them fail it wasnt just GM. I know that's good for talking points. The whole us automotive infra structure would of went with it.
Also I dont get it, hedge fund managers make a 100s of millions of dollars and thats fine but some working stiff making a living wage to support his family is an over paid us worker. lol

Also if the gov didnt step in ,we had a banking crisis at the same time no one would of put up the money for the bankruptcy. Also if you have a biz in adult without a strong middle class in america you are fucked because they are the biggest buyers of our products.

I didn't see the show, but maybe she actually did but it was cut from the video because it didn't portray the context they were looking for.

Letterman has railed against Mitt's comments and positions and personal oddities for months. Mitt is afraid to even go on Letterman for an interview.

But the moment he says hey Obama, it's been reported that you weren't straight up.. it gets posted around. Makes sense.

you guys have no clue.. GM is doing very well against the competition.
GM's largest market is ............ China.
and the cars are produced in .......... India.
BTW, these cars are super small compacts and are also selling very well in EU.

I love it when the 99% complains about overpaid neighbors when company execs are literally raping salaries for their own. It shows the koolaid is strong now.

Interesting comment really.

The big three has a long history of inefficiency and even arrogance. I have a book written by Lee Iacocca that tells wild stories about how the execs at the big three used to fly in shrimp from Japan on a private jet for them to eat lunch in rooms with white gloved waiters.

I think a huge part of the problem is healthcare - specifically for their retirees. How many people get benefits from the big three after they've retired? USPS has the same problem. The US military would have it too if it wasn't for the VA.

healthcare yeah ok but the real smelly turd in the room is the retirement packages.
actually i personally believe Obama should have left GM to go under.
i dont believe in any of the bail outs, none...
all short term fixes but since Presidents are only around for 4 - 8 years, he wont feel the effect of the bail out cost, his kids might though; as in being fiscal slaves to the Chinese.

A big part of the problem is Unions. If there's an industry or a company that's about to go under look around to see if there are Unions involved if there are thats about 95% of the problem.

Yep those bastards want a decent wage and benefits for their members where do they get the balls. It's better like walmart, the Waltons get richer and it's costs the tax payer about 400k per store for their near poverty employees.

The big shocker is that that's the first lie Letterman has heard from Obama.

there are unions and then there are unions greedy enough to close down US run and owned companies.
look at the airlines. look at the auto industry. look at the transportation shipping industry.
Short term greedy unions have brought these US dominated industries to their knees, now there are foreign owned business running these industries mostly outside union territory.
Now these unions are crying foul and blaming the administrations for exporting US jobs.
REALLY?

Here's the video showing the longer 7 minute interview.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=nsPEd697dzE

The Let Detroit Go Bankrupt part starts about 2:30m

As you can see, Rachel does respond and then Letterman closes with "Yeah, part of it is .. is that I don't know what I'm talking about."

I'm not a fan of unions that like you employees holding you hostage. If you don't like the offer leave!

On the other hand I think employers should do more for their employees.

If you have never seen the documentary of George Westinghouse watch it. He was the model for capitalism. He profited by helping others, inventing and innovating and treated his employees very well. His only mistake was over extending himself and letting the bankers screw him. But even then he was still very rich and had many other profitable businesses.

Tony, you have to understand what is at play here. Because Obama did what he did, he didn't give the republicans a REAL opportunity to say he business UN-friendly and that we LOST record jobs because of Obama...that is what they are most unhappy about. I know they LIKE to say he is business unfriendly but they seem to ignore all the businesses, and therefore, jobs he saved this way. It really is a tough pill to swallow.
