The knife that went into my lung (and punctured it), was twisted before it was pulled out. And that left a nasty mark.

I called my insurance company today and they said that they would cover only 20% of the costs since it's a specialist. That leaves me with around $5k to get a comprehensive test.

Charge him $5k to stress test his wallet to see if it can hold all that slimy money he's trying to pilfer.

If a fat, old fuck like me can qualify for advanced open water and nitrox certifications, you can probably find a good doctor who will give you the test you need and fix you if he can.

If your condition is truly unfixable, be smart and change sports.

Fly over to cancun and get the cert. Its cheaper and they will do it.

Good thing the dive shop offers full refunds. I'm still fucking pissed!!!

Can't you move to another place - where medical exam is optional ? :2 cents:

We would dive all the time and you could ride the bus for .50 cents anywhere on the island. We dove and body surfed all over with his brothers tanks and our misc stuff. It wasn't until I moved back to the mainland and went on a Bahama vacation that I learned I needed paperwork just to fill a tank.

The insurance companies now rule everything we do.

.

Heh, I was just looking at that area in Oahu for our vacation. Recommend it?

Oddly enough I am in nearly the exact situation!

It's the whole liability thing going on.

Here's the thing................you do not have to take a course to dive.

Do your homework, find the books and the most current information and go for it!

:2 cents:

You won't find many that will do it. They have insurance so if something happens to someone, regardless if they lied on the waiver or not, they are still liable.

It sucks, I get it, I can never get certified because of my seizures. But then I think about the crazy stories I've heard from people who don't have medical issues and the shit that can go wrong. Personally, I don't want to seize that far down in the ocean.

Just go to any resort town and do the course there. I recommend Boca del Toro, Panama. $175 to get your PADI open water cert, plus they throw in two free dives on top. Great place to dive, and quite the party town.

Always wanted to dive in the keys for lobsters!

All you need for that is snorkel and fins.
My band used to play down there in the mid 1980's and we snorkeled and ate lobster every day. :)

Thank your doctor, Rob

I used to make my living as a diver / underwater videographer and have seen too many folks that had no business being in the water pushing their luck...

Whoa.. dude. Shitty deal. Glad to see that you survived an ordeal like that though, could def have been a worse ending.

But at the end of the day, if there's a will, there's a way (mostly). You can strengthen your chest walls and lungs itself but you cannot strengthen your linings and membranes. Your long term health is most important but I hope you get to clearing soon enough. I always wanted to SCUBA.. It's very fascinating to me.

what about free diving ?

dgraves 10-24-2012 05:32 PM

Dive in Mexico. You could be bleeding to death and they'll still let you dive...no problemo amigo!

The biggest and most dangerous pressure change in diving happens between the surface to 15ft deep.
