He would have broken the sound barrier in the first 30 - 60 seconds. He was up over 700 mph at that point.

Turboface 10-14-2012 11:35 AM

YouTube is down. I have a feeling it has something to do with this jump - lol.

Im not sure they did not say he did i will wait for the news conference

Lace 10-14-2012 11:41 AM

That was truly insane! They cut once when he was spinning out of control, but went right back.

Is it official that he didn't break the sound barrier, and missed the free fall record? It did look like he pulled the chute a little early.

Last I saw it went from 6.6 mil to 6.7 mil viewers in a few seconds, literally.

Freefall I'm pretty sure he missed. But the sound barrier stuff they said would be pretty early on in the decent, while he had the least resistance. So I would think he managed to get this one.

When is the press conference?

To break the speed barrier he had to go faster than 690mph. I saw on the screen at one point her was way over 700mph.

I think it's just not official yet, but it probably will be.

Ya, he did hit over 700mph.

I hope he did, I will be very disappointed if he did not.

Actually, there is no "the" sound barrier. In very high altitude or colder environments sound barrier can be broken faster than in lower altitudes or warmer environments.

In space, you could break the sound barrier easily if you traveled only with your cars speed at earth, but opposite it would be harder to reach the speed in space if you want to break the sound barrier undersea.

Sure, Mach 1 is what "the" is compared to here, but sound barrier is always relative to the environment you're in. Just like pressure, energy and your fluids boiling point :upsidedow

Joseph Kittinger did this back in 1959 at 19 miles high and approximately top speed of 614mph.

That said "Est Speed" if I recall correctly.

Raz 10-14-2012 12:27 PM

Thumbs up to the man who needs no parachute...Kinda. :thumbsup

Poppy 10-14-2012 12:45 PM

IMO it was more ballsy when Kittinger jumped, but with that said, Felix's jump was ballsy as well. Exciting to watch and cool to see Kittinger with him there on the mic.

Si 10-14-2012 01:34 PM

I'm sure I read 720mph maybe more at one point.

He didn't get the freefall record though, he done about 4:20 and think the record was 4:40 or more. But he reached much higher speed that's for sure!

I remember watching a program during the week about this and they said it might be more difficult because he would be travelling much faster than kittinger thus making the higher jump, shorter in effect.

If that was wrong then maybe he pulled it early because he couldn't see, he said his visor was fogging up. I would have pulled it aswell if I couldn't see lol (as if I'd ever do what this guy did! He's amazing!). I hate wearing sunglass or goggles with a bit of fog on them :1orglaugh

Totally amazing to watch!

Ask for a refund.

TheSenator 10-14-2012 02:34 PM

Joseph Kittinger's 4 minutes, 36 second record from 1960 still stands.
