I lived just north of Seoul for a year, have traveled all over the peninsula by bike & train.

I'd skip it and go somewhere else.

I lived there for a year. Lot's of hot, friendly girls. Much like Thailand, there are those that look like farmers and those that look like international models. If you are looking for fresh talent, be careful as Korea took a pretty grim view of porno when I was there. However, the girls working in the Soaps of Itaewon would be a good starting point to find what you are looking for.

If I was going on vacation in Korea, I'd concentrate on Seoul. Depending on the time of year, I'd travel around the rest of the country. Fishing in the Sea of Japan is great. Spring is wet; but, beautiful green countryside. Winter has plenty of skiing.

I'd say to tailor your trip to the time of year. Just know that the people are really friendly and you can have a good time where ever you are.

I remember walking down the street my second day in country and this girl came out and invited me into her home for her father's birthday party. I ended up staying the entire weekend with the family and had a great time. Just be ready to go with the flow.

If you go fishing in the Sea of Japan, dont call it the Sea of Japan. You'll piss the Koreans off. They call it the Yellow Sea.

Dont even mention Japan.

When you're walking down the sidewalk and a Korean just bumps into you and keeps walking without saying anything... just pretend it didnt happen. They do that there. It's not a challenge or a sign of aggression.

If you've got blue or green eyes, dont walk around with your sunglasses on if you can handle it. The Korean girls loves blue or green eyes. Give them a wink, they get all shy and giggle. it's pretty funny actually.

Been a few years since I was there (I'm half Korean), but going back again this coming May. Taking my mom over to see family and stuff. We'll spend a few days in Seoul, and the rest of the time on the east coast.

Korea is a cool place, I like it there. The only problem is that the Korean guys are too protective of the Korean girls.

They do that in Toronto, too. Probably everywhere else, as well. Asians tend to hunch over, walk forward, and go about their business.

When they arrive at their destination, they're as friendly as fuck. En route, though, they don't see anybody else.

I think you'll have a much better time in Macau. Skip Korea. Soon to be a parking lot or a pile of rubble. north and south.

I spent a couple weeks in Korea though only 3 days in Seoul. Basically Seoul is the only part of Korea that gets any tourism so it's a lot cooler than the rest.

Pretty much anywhere I've been in the world there has been a lot of English being spoken but don't expect that in Korea. The cabbies and waitresses know squat so expect to do some pointing.

If you go you should check out the lonely planet forum (I don't know if the "no forum links" rule is still in effect, even though it's not adult related) and post a question in the Seoul forum about things to do.

One thing about Korea is that they are the Irish of Asia. Every restaurant will have a $1.50 bottle of Soju on the table! It's kinda known as cheap Sake and it takes a bit for it to grow on you but I'm hooked now. Oh and DO NOT drink 2 bottles of it, you will have the worst headache in the morning.

BTW if you're in Seoul check out the times for the USO tour to the DMZ

Spent quite a bit of time in Seoul and Osan (while in the Navy), years ago.

I found Korea in some ways to be like a low-rent version of Japan (if you have been to Japan), and I found that the locals are more likely to take advantage of tourists in Korea (especially in the bar/redlight districts), so be aware of your surroundings and be careful.

Korea is notorious for black market bargains, with counterfeit anything you can imagine.

South Korea has been going through rapid social transitions since the 60's. Since that time, Christianity has surpassed Buddhism as the major religion, although there are numerous cult-like Christian sects in Korea too (think Rev. Moon, and even stranger variations).

Another thing to keep in mind, is that the Korean people have been living under the shadow of war ever since fighting in the Korean War stopped in the 50's. I remember during one visit, we were driving down a freeway, when police lights and sirens suddenly popped up alongside the road, and everyone started pulling over so that some military jets could do a practice emergency landing on the freeway (I guess in case the airport was bombed). A very surreal peacetime experience, to see a jet speeding past you on the freeway (wish I had a camera with me for that one).

Have a nice trip!

ADG

hey man..hit me up i go to Seoul usually once a year for a long time now.
It is awesome, the food and nightlife.
Nice to travel outside the city as well, just pick any direction and go into the mountains, there are a few nice ski resort areas.
