Red State - Kevin Smith

Watched it yesterday with great expectations... Very disappointed tbh.

I didn't expect a 'Jay & Silent Bob' movie...

But as far as it supposedly being Tarantino-esque etc, I was rather let down

What say you?

I saw the movie and liked it. I didn't know it was a Kevin Smith movie until after the fact. Once I found out I was slightly disappointed because I expect better things from him.

It was worth watching.

I saw it when he toured with it and did the Q&A sessions afterwards, and I really enjoyed it and thought John Goodman and Michael Parks had excellent performances. You gotta keep in mind he was trying something entirely different in this film and had no studio backing and a small budget with no advertising. He took it on the road to small theaters where he did the Q&A sessions afterwards, and after that it was straight to DVD and Netflix.

I believe after his hockey movie and maybe one more he is done for good directing movies, and is just going to concentrate on his Smodcast network, some TV content, and live touring...

I wasn't a huge fan but I would like to see it again to refresh my memory. I also saw him do a Q&A locally and he talked about this movie for 2 hours. He said he wanted to make a true horror movie. A throw-back to the old times and style. I think he failed there.

I think he's one of the most overrated film makers. In all his "classic" movies that everyone seems to love, the acting and dialogue come off as wooden and contrived. It's like you can tell you're watching an actor repeat lines he/she just memorized a few minutes ago off a piece of paper.

Never understood why people hold them in such high regard.

They are just OK movies with a few well-placed crude jokes and one-liners.

Just the same, Red State was a passable horror / thriller type movie but certainly nothing special.

Kevin hasnt hit a homerun in a long time. If he didnt work so cheap. He would have a hard time getting movies made.

Watched Red State expecting so much more than was delivered. Total disappointment.

"How much do you think a cross like that costs?"

"In dollars or common sense?"

"Zing!"

One of the best final lines of any movie ever -- and it summed everything up perfectly.

I agree, never understood the hype. Very mediocre film maker.
