You could have been hit by the EMD update maybe. If you want to do good in google just embed videos from other sites with stolen content, interlink all your sites like this, and buy a few back links. Despite what Matt Cutts says it's the way to rank and what Google rewards.

Well not exactly. Basically your domains should not be EMD with little backlinks or traffic. That's what it comes down to. Of course they use the term "low quality" but it mostly comes down to backlinks. The penalties apply to some and not others primarily depending on back links (quality back links = better). No one will admit that but it's what is being seen.

I still do really well with my exact match domains, provided they have unique content. The ones which have too many incoming exact match keyword links (same keyword in the link as the domain) are dropped to page 200+ For me that was the issue. Make sure incoming link keywords are a little different than your domain keywords.

I'll try and find this article I read about exact match keywords to the domain. It was a big seo company and they published their results after all the google updates.
They said sites that had exact match keywords to the domain did better and were not effected by the updates.
The sites that had multiple keywords or diversified anchors linking into the site were affected the most.

They said it was better to have links pointing to the site with the domain or site name in it. my site name or mysitename.com

Yeah I had a little bit of a traffic drop too, this is the first Google update that has effected me negatively . It sucks because I spent the last month really churning out blog after blog and had gained lots of traffic and now some of it's gone.

BUT, just watch it for a week or so...I find that after a couple of weeks the traffic usually evens out from the updates and goes back to normal. It's hard to see exactly what effect it has had until after a little bit of time has passed and the rankings settle down.

Good backlinks + frequent unique updates = good rankings. It isn't all that hard really. It is only hard when you try to half ass it. Lazy SEO ends up being more work in the long run.

People miss the obvious with Google. It's increasingly relying on back link profiles in one way or another to determine ranking. such as whether it largely determines ranking order or whether or not penalties apply. But this is obviously flawed. A user doesn't care how many back links a page has or what the site's alexa ranking is. The user only cares about finding the relevant content which they are looking for. But the geniuses at Google have forgotten this. The primary legitimate use the back link signal has is to help determine whether a site is spam. That's it. It should never have been used for these other purposes. Doing so is like ranking men by morality based on how many suits they own. It just doesn't make any sense and even if there is a correlation you should keep in mind that it isn't an ideal factor to use. It's just that now everyone is used to such madness.

Here's a little tip. When doing backlinks for your EMD, focus a higher percentage on pushing your EMD as a "brand". Google seems to have a hard on for brand strategies recently. Expect it to make a bigger impact in the next updates for Penguin. It makes sense though-people SHOULD be branding their site properties. The old generic link strategies don't make much sense - at least from the end user's perspective.

yes it is reversible just like penguin. Dilution is the answer.

hit it with a lot of economistjobs.tld links. Just the url. In-content, sidebar, etc. Next to it, make sure you use text that 'brands' the domain ie., Another quality (target keyword) post from url. Only on a MINORITY of your backlinks should you anchor the target keyword to your site. And of those, randomize the target url.

The key here, if it's not obvious already, is to make it look "NATURAL."

95% backlinks going to an emd site with the emd anchor to the main page is not natural.

Not using unique text. Relying too much on duplicate/spun text. Too much internal linking from your own network. Using spammy methods of getting backlinks.

I don't think SEO has changed all that much over the years. I see all this talk about how things change with each update. Quality unique content and good backlinks will always have good results. It only becomes difficult when people try to cheat the search engines in some way. I think the only thing that has changed over the years is the importance of updates. In the web 2.0 era updates are vital.
