I'm hoping that this doesn't happen in the U.S. when we finally run out of credit to keep borrowing money and the govt. faucet gets shut off here too.

Anything anti-any-government should give you a chubby. They've outworn their welcome. They abuse their authority. From top to bottom they are corrupt. Every government. Everywhere.
No-one becomes a politician to serve. People become politicians for the perqs and the pension. That is all. Maybe when they're young they have vague dream. That dream dies really, really fast once reality hits them. I'm not paranoid - its the truth. Public service is a joke. It does not exist outside of a few charitable organizations. Personal service is the reality. And I don't even care. In Canada we have low-level, unelected bureaucrats with better pay, better pensions, better benefits, and more authority than most judges. Judges in Canada do not have the authority to overturn ANY decision made by ANY level of government above municipal. |

For healthcare/small pension I have to pay around $300 a month I cant opt out, even if I only earned say $500 a month I would still have to pay $300. But as the governments skint cause they've spunked cash on shit, they've changed the rules. I now have to pay for medicines and have to work longer to get a pension. No one has given me anything. In fact I've been to the doctors once in the past 10 years, and I will never get a pension here as I wont have been here the 40 years minimum you now have to pay. so my one doctors visit has cost me.... $36,000 It does also cover unemployment benefit, but as I'm self employed, I get alot less than being employed, even though I pay the same.... stupid rules. |

I meant no offense to you. It's the govt.'s fault for making too many promises to too many people. The promises they made can't be paid for...but they did it to get people to vote for them.

Spain used to be a poor country, people accepted what they had and got on with it. Easy/low credit made people/government borrow more than they could afford. Also unemployment is always stupidly high, however when the building boom started 5 million South Americans got work visas. Trouble with that is, they worked for 2-3 years got made unemployed so they get benefits, the cost of health/schooling on their families has ended up costing the country a fortune, even though they're buggered here they wont go home because they know they'll be more buggered there. Not being anti immigrant as I am one myself here, but anyone could see the stupidity of having 10%+ employment (now 25%) and bringing in 10% of the populations worth of foreign labor. |

1) Entitlements are stopped. When the poor can no longer suck the tit of the government and their welfare checks stop, all hell is breaking loose and it's going to start in the ghettos of every city. 2) If there is a run on the banks. At this rate and direction, a dollar crash is inevitable. When that happens and people can't get their money from the banks, or finally understand that it is worthless, all hell is going to break loose. 3) Apple closes. ![]() |

I'll never understand why people believe the poor are the cause of government collapse, the reason for a poor economy, or why we're so massively in debt. Those on welfare account for barely a drop in the bucket. Our corrupt politicians spend us into bankruptcy and beyond, blame the poor, and people believe them for some odd reason. All the hate is focused onto the wrong people and that's just the way they want it.

So you believe if the poor paid taxes their vote would go to less government spending? Which candidate in history has ever taken office and decreased government spending?

to be fair, some of these were passed by carter I believe, but it's been quietly going on for a while, Obama has added to it. He passed one that allows the Secret Service to arrest anyone on Federal Property or anyone they feel is endangering federal property, with out a need for any specific reason. Because of the Occupy movement

So if their govt. doesn't spend much on military....then what DO they spend all their money on? Free healthcare? Entitlements? Every economic analyst that I've seen on the news has said that those countries have simply promised more to people than could have ever been sustained. Am I misinformed on that? EDIT: And that doesn't make "the poor" the "cause of govt. collapse". It's the govt. that did it. From what the economic analysts said...the govt. over there has entitlement programs for EVERYONE. So the hard working people get it too (like healthcare and other benefits) |

I haven't seen that reported anywhere. What the analysts on CNN said (Ali Velshi's show) has been that the govt. made promises to the entire population that were simply unrealistic. Isn't that what the Greek govt. did to spend themselves into that huge amount of debt? I'm just asking. From what you wrote it sounds like they spent a ton of money that they didn't have...but what are they spending it on? If it's all the goodies they promised EVERYBODY (not the poor...EVERYBODY) then that is what I am saying. When you promise people a bunch of stuff that you can't possibly deliver...they are going to be pissed off. |

And no, I don't mean to the "poor". I mean the govt. passing bills to spend money it doesn't have for a million things it shouldn't be involved in. Social Security is supposed to be our own money coming back to us for retirement. IF that was really the way it worked I have no problem with that (except that we are all FORCED to do it...which the govt. shouldn't have the power to do) But overall that is acceptable. Same with medicare. The rest of the things our govt. does...funding arts, hospitals, schools, etc. all SOUNDS good. But it's not the role of govt. As for "corporate welfare"....that shit should have NEVER happened. Yes, farm subsidies was a well intentioned idea. And of course it has now expanded to "subsidizing" everything. ![]() But it's not the role of govt. And ANY business that the feds hand money to is simply a redistribution of wealth and is socialism. If the U.S. govt. would stop the insane military spending then yeah...I could better understand entitlements and 'welfare" type programs. When I was younger, I would read in my schoolbooks how the govt. would have to choose between "guns and butter" (military or social spending). And you couldn't have both. So thank goodness there were only a few wars. These days? We spend more on the military than the next ten or so countries do put together! And there is no "real" war happening. It doesn't make sense to me. |

Bilbao got a new museum worth millions, so every other damn city wanted one. The small regional banks had the politicians on their boards, so they got lent whatever $$ they wanted to build airports no one needed, 5 lane freeways connecting small towns. just silly stuff. Regional politicians are the worst of the worst they all think they're gods. (Scotland take note ![]() I live in small town, yet they blew 12 million euros on an arts and artisan center. Also Spain got hammered by the European bank. when it was booming Germany/France weren't so interest rates kept coming down, and German money poured into Spain. They were building 100's of thousands of new houses mainly for northern Europeans as holiday homes, which the government gets around 10% tax on, so big bucks. then suddenly no building, none it stops. So take away the tax on the buildings plus the tax on the wages of people working in construction, add on the unemployment benefits you now have to pay them and it adds up. Credit should have been tightened, but when a government cant control interest rates, you're buggered. |

They are blaming a corrupt government and the rich in Greece. They are calling it "the failure of the elite". Tax dodging is a national sport in Greece, tax inspectors get kickbacks to make the problem go away. It costs Greece ?45 billion a year in lost revenue, more than it needs to pay off it's debt.
