Do Bank Tellers ask you nosey questions about your business?

Is it just me or are these people annoying as fuck with their questions?

What do you do?

What exactly do you do?

How does that work?

Seriously, banks need to make it a rule that tellers can't ask customers random questions about the customer's business.

I feel like they are trying to get in on my action becuase they are sick of making $12/hr

I now just stare at them and don't respond if they ask me a 2nd question after I tell them I do online advertising.

Most of my payments are wires but I have random checks I need to take in once in a while.

I'm 99% sure a chick that worked at my old bank googled one of my checks because she stopped being nice to me at some point lol

I get the same thing and I overhear the same thing a lot. I think this may actually be some kind of bank policy to snoop, but who knows.

Hand her a card and tell her if she wants to make extra money on the side, to call you. Actually do this to anyone that ask you what do you do.

Well now I just deposit checks through my mobile phone but I used to do them at the ATM. The only thing I'd do in person was bigger cash withdrawals and was never asked questions.

EVEN if you hide your business they KNOW what you do...

They just pretend to look like they dont know, but they really know it.

Any bank in the world knows that CCBILL = PORN... So, lets all be honest here, no reason to hide anything.

The only moment when banks can ask you lots of questions is if you receive a big wire...

And yeah my banks know it, altough I told them that I do internet affiliate marketing (which is true), they know that im adult related, but they dont care, as long as my monies are in their bank they are happy.

I can't remember the last time I actually talked to a bank teller. Why go in? Quick check deposit or electronic deposit and handle all my banking online.

Back in the good days I deposited a lot of cheques, big deposits were naturally wires, but I'd still walk into the bank in a good month with 80-100 small cheques from various sponsors at a time all US funds.. I just tell them I do web hosting and design. My business bankers know what I do but no point in explaining to every teller.

Almost forgot about the old DogFart cheques that listed their name on them - that got a few funny questions

I live in a major city and they're almost always noisy as fuck. Some more so than others. Some to the point of being rude. I had a friend of a friend who worked as a teller for awhile and she told me it's their job to ask questions, so that they can file an SAR if they think there's anything dodgy. I dunno.

Also, same as the guy a few posts above - I've had a teller tell me one of my checks looked fake. It was from amakings and to be fair.. it did look fake. Looked like it was printed on a home computer. They should fix that.

For the past 3 years or so they now have automated machines, you just toss in your checks, it automatically adds em up and then your done. Only time I have to deal with a teller is foreign checks, as the machine cant read em.

Step up your game.

I used to think this too, that they were making notes about me. Then my sister got a job at the bank I do business with, and she's a manager now. I asked her to lookup my account and tell me what the notes say one day, and she said there was just one that said I regularly deposit US cheques. She said they can write notes, but they really only do it if the teller suspects fraud or if a customer totally freaks the fuck out, or the kind of note on my account to help the next teller.

I've told them many times I'm in the porn industry, they usually just laugh and ask questions, etc.

I used to have a bank teller that was amazingly hot and fun and kool one day i handed her a modeling biz card that looked like $100 bills told her she could make way more in adult biz lol :D She kept card said she was flattered, but got shy and said she wasnt really interested :D The dogfart ones are funny since they put those super hardcore flyers in them, i forgot to open the checks and get rid of that before going to the bank before, sometimes i would leave those in odd places near the exit of banks if no one was looking figured i'd get them a sale or 2

The main motivation for the small-talk, personal notes, special invitations, etc is building a "banking relationship" with the customer over a period of time to facilitate the upsell of premium bank accounts, business loans, mortgage refinancing, mutual funds, annuities, insurance, etc; are salespeople these days.

Fraud prevention is truly secondary, an after-thought, to the primary mission of bank tellers (aka relationship specialists, etc) of pushing more financial products.

I once had a teller ask what I do, I was going to the bank 2-3 times a week to deposit checks bigger then what she was making in 2 weeks before taxes. I also dressed nice, was clean cut, I'm young and drive a decent vehicle. I told her "entertainment".

I have the ability to scan from a computer, or deposit from a smartphone camera so I don't go to the *credit union* branch unless I need a cashiers check, they're free.

That is so untrue. Lots of banks don't deal with adult. That's why most of us lie or stretch the truth when they ask what we do.

Yes. I just give them one word answers until they stop asking me questions, and it works with most of them.

There is this one persistent bitch at my main bank, and I try and avoid Louise when I can. But when she starts in, I am just rude to her to get the point across. I'll cut her off with some remark like... "Are you on the management fast track with all these questions"... "Do you get a prize for the most questions in a single transaction"... "do you have another job as police detective"....

That usually puts an end to it.

we leased cameras, lights and a car through our bank - the lady always just sighed and said "as long as all is legal..."

but we have a client that still sends checks for $10k or $15k regularly and here in CZ that raises some eyebrows - but only cause they never see international checks with amounts like this.

Funny thing, the teller at my bank left a message a week or two ago saying he had a "question" about the cheque I'd just deposited. I've checked my online banking a few times since and it hasn't been reversed, so I'm going to let him chase me up. Wouldn't be surprised if it was something unrelated to actually clearing it.

I was upgrading my internet plan yesterday and the chick started asking a bunch of questions, like what sort of business I ran. I politely told her that I didn't see why they'd need to know. She asked again. I told her again, not relevant to your company providing me with an internet service. She left it at that. Weird???

You're right, but I think the nosey questions about "what do you actually do" are more fraud/whatever related.

I wish they would just shut the fuck up though. Like a teller EVER has the answer about ANYTHING.
