production expense 2000, production expense 2013

in 2000 my production expense was 16.6% of a shoot budget, not including gear and location... I will add that a camera cost $2500 more or less... (we didn't shoot vid in 2000, no broadband at that time) rent was $1200, utilities about $120 a month. gas was about $1.28 a gallon/

in 2013 my production expense is 54.2% of a shoot budget, stills camera cost 8K, vid cam coast about $4500, location lease is $4400 a month, utilities are about 2K per month... gas is $4.00 a gallon more or less...

how is it for you guys?

and my net was 27% on revenue, now 15%-16% on total revenue... as L Pink pointed out 9% these days BUT I'm working more hours with a net 'income' increase of 59% and my tax went from 36% to 44%...

BTW I'm not eligible for 'subsidized health care' i.e. buying off the 'Obama Exchange', my health insurance is going up 31%

how is it going for you guys?

don't heat the pool any more and the location is strictly studio... I would not live here if I wasn't shooting and at 10K +/- per month is it really worth it? I sure do love it, but.....

" stills camera cost 8K, vid cam coast about $4500 "

What gear is that?
Do you mean camera only, or together with the lens?

Over the years the types of photo and video shoots I do have changed quite a bit so there isn't really a direct comparison for me from 1993 to 2000 to 2013.

On full day shoots I generally double in revenue what I outlay on expenditures. I rent a real nice house that I love and sometimes use as a location among other places I rent by the day. The approximately $2500 monthly rent for my place is usually paid for in effect by what I am saving on rentals so I'm essentially living rent free.

I have accumulated tens of thousands of dollars of photo, video, lighting, audio, computer equipment and accessories over the years. I also have quite an investment in costumes and props for shoots. For example, I have over $3500 just in various color comforters, blankets, top sheets and throw pillows to dress beds as well as about twenty custom made changeable slip covers in various bright solid and patterns for my love seat and chair.

I just spoke to my independent health insurance agent and I was able to lock in roughly the same rate (about $184/month) for my health insurance premium with Coventry for the next year through December 2014 with just a moderate increase in the deductible for catastrophic injury. Remains to be seen what the situation is after then.

Always like the production threads

Started in 2000 with a Canon GL 2 for about 1900 and that was it.

Now days, Canon xf105, 5D, 3 divas and and a spider. i don't have much equipment but still, way more expensive to shoot these days.

13 years ago i remember buying a Canon XL1 just because it looked so cool. Even though it didn't have a viewfinder and I knew i would rarely use it.

These days, there's cameras i like and want to own but i'm over it. I just try and watch every single penny.
