Any Magento Gurus Here (modifying code/templates)

Anyone know a lot about Magento?

I have a simple issue I need to fix and I'm burned out. I know its very simple. But i've spent a week solving "simple" thing after "simple" thing after upgrading from an older version and still fighting it.

Basically, I just need to display the "regular price" only on the index page and the "special price" only on the product page.

version 1.7.*

If your store has only a few hundred items or less and gets relatively little sales activity (ie. under 100 or so orders per day), check out some alternatives, in particular, ZenCart - sure it's dated (imho, that's a plus; updates are released far apart), but uses very few resources (runs great on a cheapo shared server) and is simple to understand with lots of add-on mods.

Magento is a nightmare ... thousands of files, and updating is not for the faint of heart - though it keeps many consultants employed (some speculate some of the reason for it's excess complexity is intentional), since few laypeople have the time to figure it out; time is money.

I've been down the Magento road and thankfully realized early on to drop that hot potato and go with something else that's truly free and easier to maintain.

Thanks. I'm not good at all with PHP. In most cases things can be commented out and moved around. I just don't know what and where.

Trying to research online is tricky because with all the people asking similar questions because all the versions are often different enough to make it hard to figure out.

Yeah, I had no experience with any similar systems and just chose this. Now its the monster I know. The store pretty much gets ignored and the products never change and its a very specific 100 or so supplements that has its own core customer group from a brick and mortar business, so its not a huge issue.

Recently one thing after another went wrong and being that the old version couldn't be updated to the new version easily, I opted to just create a fresh install and re-add all the products. Sounded like a good idea. Had no idea so much random shit could go wrong.
