If your store has only a few hundred items or less and gets relatively little sales activity (ie. under 100 or so orders per day), check out some alternatives, in particular, ZenCart - sure it's dated (imho, that's a plus; updates are released far apart), but uses very few resources (runs great on a cheapo shared server) and is simple to understand with lots of add-on mods.
Magento is a nightmare ... thousands of files, and updating is not for the faint of heart - though it keeps many consultants employed (some speculate some of the reason for it's excess complexity is intentional), since few laypeople have the time to figure it out; time is money.
I've been down the Magento road and thankfully realized early on to drop that hot potato and go with something else that's truly free and easier to maintain.
