You're not alone in thinking putting a tablet OS on the desktop is an, um, odd move...

They are trying to be the first to blur the line between devices.
Your pc, tablet, phone and laptop will soon have all the same capabilities.
Plug your phone into a keyboard and monitor and it will work just like a pc
Surface tablets are tablets that can run real software
It's not a bad idea, but it is far from complete

What I did (for a short time because I got bored with it) was to use a triple monitor setup.

The third screen was a 15" touchscreen that I kept the metro interface on. The other two were for the desktop screens.

Exactly, the vision is solid but it will take time. I have some friends working at MS here in Seattle and some of the additional insight they have given me has made me believe they are on to something good. It's just a lot of disruptive tech that needs to go into play over what seems like an eternity in the tech world. If they execute it right it will change a lot.

I was under the impression you can make it look basically like windows 7 does now just by adjusting some features, for people that have no intentions of using a touch screen.

Im guessing it's because of touch screens. Most PCs in the future will be touch screens. I have a huge touch screen - one of those all in one combos - and I love it. In fact, now on my main PC here every now and then I catch myself trying to touch my screen.

No, it's because it's easier for them to make one OS for tablets and desktops, whilst obviously the two things need different UIs.

PMSL! That really is funny. Just cos you got suckered into buying one, doesn't mean most PCs are going to be touch screen. People don't want a touch screen on the desktop, which is why I think you are the only person that bought one. They want it on a tablet.

The technology is years and years old. How many manufacturers make a touch screen desktop?

QED.

I did read something about a function that gives you the start button back.
If they do not have a function that will give it the look of windows7 they should build one asap. I for one have no intention of working on a touchscreen. I play with an ipad but for working I need a keyboard.

it more likely that web cams are going to be replaced with kinects/web cam hybrids

microsoft research showed a proto type a little while ago

you will just wave you hands in a specific way to simulate the touch screen effect and the computer will react as if you touched the screen

MS still hauls in 3.5 Billion dollars a year in software license fees. It's fixed income until the market changes. They don't need to earn a penny on any of this, they just need to make sure when the market changes, they aren't left out of the new market as their license rights dry up.

They are in the perfect position to place biig game changing bets.

I disagree with you. You and I are not the average user. The average user is a computer noob who doesn't want to hassle with cords and monitors. The all in one computers will be the wave of the future. And they will be touchscreens.

I didn't buy my HP touchscreen because I wanted a touchscreen; I bought it because I wanted an all in one model to side on the side of my desk just to run my email. I would watch my email roll in in the corner of my eye, and the touch screen was great for quickly deleting emails I didn't need. I have three monitors now on my main PC so the touch screen is no longer in the office with me, but the wife and kid still use it daily.

Clearly they are making Win8 so that it will be more friendly to touch screens.

That's a different point. Apple proved with the original mac that at all in one was good. Then the iMac. Everyone else copied them. Yes, all in one PCs are good.

So why do you think that in the last 10 years the technology has been available no one has used it for a desktop?

Because it doesn't work in terms of UI when you are sitting at a desk. It works on mobile devices. Not desktops.

Could have saved a lot of money then. Also, having a PC dedicated to email seems weird.

Right, I see emails I don't want, and without taking my hands off the keyboard, I perform a keystroke and they go. You seem to be suggesting taking your hands off the keyboard, leaning over and swiping fingers on a screen is better? No. It's a lot longer a process.

The fact that some of your family use your discarded PC doesn't really convince me it is the future of computing.

No, they are making Win8 to shoehorn Metro onto the desktop because it will make life easier for them just doing one OS. They are ignoring the fact that mobile devices and desktops need different UIs.

This is indeed the direction that manufacturers are going.
