$836 dollars, damn there must have not been to many bidders.

I'm sympathetic for the elderly who live on a fixed income. If some gov aid/social worker would have taken some time to get involved, they could have found a way to help her out

He lied to me, he destroyed bushes on my property, removed trees on my property, violated HOA rules, violated city laws, and turned a two car driveway into a commercial parking lot so his renter could run illegally run a business with a dozen employees out of his garage.

Your right, I'm an asshole.

Rochard,

Am I right in thinking that you hated this guy before any of this? i.e. this isn't what you'd do to any random neighbor

you are because what probably happened was he removed bushes that were mostly on his side of the property line, he expanded his drive way 1 foot too far and I know this because he only has a strip of gravel that is about 1 foot long. Aren't you running an illegal home based business to but he hasn't turned you in yet. If he was running a business the asshole neighbor you are would have reported him and then there would have been no need for the additional parking. He very likely has a large family and you just a busy Betsy neighbor.

not everyone is meant to be a home owner. there is no shame in renting if you can't afford your own house.

Fast forward in life and you're 80 years old. You're alone. You keep up on your bills but somehow you made a mistake OR you simply didn't have enough money to pay your SEWAGE bill, due to whatever reason, and you lost your house of 49 years over it. 40 years of being responsible, 40 eyars of doimng everything right, then one slip of $400 causes you to lose everything.

Sorry man, that is just not right. And it can happen to anyone, at any time. There should be restrictions to what can be done in situations like this. It's not like she didn't pay her mortgage payment for several months or a year. She didn't pay her sewer bill.

The other foreclosure crisis: Losing a home over $400 in back taxes
http://money.cnn.com/2012/07/10/real...iens/index.htm

"NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- People are losing their homes over unpaid tax bills that, in some cases, add up to just a few hundred dollars.

Outdated state laws that allow local governments to sell tax liens on delinquent properties to investors in order to more quickly collect on overdue property taxes is sparking a second "foreclosure crisis," a report from the National Consumer Law Center said Tuesday. "

"The report cited a case of an 81-year-old Rhode Island woman who fell behind on a $474 sewer bill. A corporation bought the home in a tax sale for $836.39. The woman was evicted from the home she had lived in for more than 40 years and the corporation resold the place for $85,000, the report said. "

"One elderly Montana woman, who lived alone and had no close family to help her, fell more than $5,000 behind on taxes, the report said. After she failed to respond to letters from the company that bought her home in a tax sale, she was evicted from her Missoula home. As a result, she lost about $150,000 in equity in the property, according to the report."

It's pretty fucking simple. Don't pay your car payment or credit card bill, fall too far behind, they will put a lien on your home.

Is it excessive? Sure does sound like it. But usually there is a lot more involved. It's not like you fall $30 on your HOA and they take your house next month; It's a lenthgy process and if it gets to that point it either means the homeowner is a complete ass or has ignore multiple warnings.
err, thats how it SHOULD be ... google "deutsche bank & robo-signing" and you will see its not always lawful how people loose their homes over small rates (which they actually are ABLE TO PAY in many - if not most - cases)

I personally think it's one of the worst things ever.

You basically NEVER own your home and property.

The govt. can always take it from you for not paying property taxes. So if you are an elderly person living on a fixed income and can't pay your property tax...doesn't matter if you paid off your mortgage 20 years ago and have lived in "your" home all your life. The govt. is going to TAKE it.

Why should you not pay property tax just because the home is paid for? The tax is not a sales tax.

The homeowner is an Italian man named Tony. I love all things Italian really. He also owns the house behind the rental house. Frankly, he was just one of the neighbors I talked on occasionally when I walked me dog or during one of the little parties our street throws a few times a year. He came over to my house to ask me to sign off on the HOA form and I was all for it; I was all for home improvements.

I didn't know the renter until after he had moved in and was running a business from the garage.

The new renter is nice. Works from home but has zero impact on the community, and I never hear a peep from him. He's just a bit messy.

I think your just being bitter and nasty.

I have a business license, am not breaking any zoning laws, and I have zero impact on the community by working at home.

The prior renter was completely different. At 7am they opened up the garage door and ran it like a commercial business - turned on the radio, had six to eight employees show up, filling up my street with their cars, they had breakfast together, woke us up every morning, and then blocked up the street while they hitched up trailers to small pick up trucks and loaded up up with gear. I never complained about any of this, even though my landscaper could never park his truck and trailer in front of my house, and also that at least once or twice a week I was blocked in and unable to leave my house because of their trucks being loaded. Everyone else on the street was furious about this, being as they are the first house on the street and you must pass his house to get in or out.

The new neighbor works from home, makes a trip down to customs once a week in his big truck to pick up his product, which he then sells online through his website. He's a bit messy, but renters always are. I never hear a peep out of him.

I'm pissed at the homeowner because I like my house and take a small amount of pride in my yard. I used to walk out and it looked nice - trees and bushes. Now I walk outside my house and I see gravel and weeds and wooden pallets and his truck. I used to like my front yard. Now it's ugly.

And what pisses me off the most is that this guy was there for less than a year. This is my "forever home", and for the next twenty years I'll be looking at his electric meter instead of bushes and trees.

The same amount that were charged with the crimes they committed.

if you can't pay your electricity bill the electric company will turn off the service. if you buying a car and stop paying with one month left they will repo it. property tax is a tax that everyone who owns property has to pay for doesn't matter if you have a mortgage or not. if you can't afford to pay the property tax bill then sell your house and rent. seems pretty simple to me, it's called life, you live with in your means.

Provision should be made for elerly people on a fixed income who are in danger of losing their homes over a city/county/state bill IMHO. Such as pay $5 a month.

I mean hell, foodstamp/EBT benefits are $200 a month on a very low income. So to say we'll just take your house when you clearly can't make one relatively small payment is overly harsh. That's assuming there's no more backstory which there probably is.

Also, I don't see why people can't see Rochards very legitimate gripe. Just imagine your neighbor parking with his tire on the property line and stepping out onto your yard when he leaves his truck. Now imagine that he's torn out YOUR landscaping and lied on his work permit about what he's going to do. Shit, it's a totally legit complaint!

Ok but you should slow down. The electric company for one thing can not turn off service in winter when it's your heat source (at least not here in the northeast). Also, they dont threaten to terminate service unless you're over $100 in unpaid balance forward. Further, before they DO threaten to terminate, they offer you a payment plan which is usually pretty affordable. I've been there so know these things.

Maybe they did this with ALL of those examples too, but it doesn't mention it if so.

This is my "forever home", and for the next twenty years I'll be looking at his electric meter instead of bushes and trees.
if they are running an illegal business you would have complained and they would have been shut down. so i doubt it is illegal if they are still doing it.

Maybe they did this with ALL of those examples too, but it doesn't mention it if so.
People don't get thrown out of a house after two months of late payments.

It's made to seem like they got a bill, didn't pay it, and got kicked out.

I'm sure there's more backstory there. They pretty much always want the money more than they want to take on a property.

Okay, we get it. Taxes are evil and should not be a part of life. But since they are part of life, accept it and discuss real options or start a revolution.

I'm not sure where you got any of that, but none of that follows typical protocol.

A $500 sewer bill is probably a year, quite possibly more depending on where she lives. We have a year right there. Then we have liens that need to be applied, that takes time. Then we have all of the other legal crap that would have needed to take place, that takes more time. Then we have the auction, that takes more time.

The reason we have property tax is to pay for schools. Since the people that have kids can't be expected, for some reason, to pay for their own offsprings education property owners are stuck with the bill.

I pay over $1,000 a month to educate the children of others.

Also this isn't a hidden tax. Anyone purchasing real estate knows there is a yearly tax on it. Not paying would make those that do pay have to cover their shortage. How is that fair?

There are also usually ways to get a property tax deferment in most states if I'm not mistaken. And I'm SURE with city and county bills like sewage and water, you can work things out in some way as long as you communicate with them.

Basically I'm just trying to say that these places WANT their money, they don't actively seek to kick old people from their homes over $400. The old lady probably didn't know what the heck was going on or who can guess.

As far as my utility and phone, what I said is totally accurate but obviously they're specific to those companies and my own state. So I don't think we've disagreed on anything so far.

That is like losing your home because you are late on your internet bill, even if you are a few months behind. Not paying a utility bill should not lead to the loss of your home. What happens when you don't pay other utilities? They turn them off. They don't take your home. Well, I guess they do now.

Sorry, we know you are old and can't make ends meet right now due to inflation or whatever reason you want to give us that your government legitimately caused, but you're three months late on your phone bill, so we're taking your home.

Today it's $400 behind on a sewer bill. Maybe when you're 80 years old it will be $40 behind on your electric bill. Maybe by the time your son is 80, they will just imprison people for such crimes. This shit is a slippery slope.

Might have been a county assessed sewer bill for maintenance of the sewer lines. Traditionally sewer is part of your water bill and non payment leads to disconnect of services only.

So according to you no one needs to pay their utilities ever again. Or any other bill for that matter. Everyone can now just default on all their bills and the worst thing that happens is that your utilities gets turn off.

It doesn't work like that. If you fail to pay your bill, the service gets disconnected. Keep in mind that they don't disconnect you until your three or four months later. Then they move on to the next step, which is collections. Then - and at this point it's been nearly a year since the first late notice - they move on to legal filings, and sue you in court. That's another six month process. At this point the original $400 now includes interest, late fees, additional costs for collection attempts, and now attorney fees.

In the mean time you have your local city government, which provides us with sewage. In my case it's sewage, garbage, and water - All for $80 a month. My local city government is going broke, laying off police officers, firemen, closing down fire stations and police offices, and slashed the medical benefits of the very people who provide me with my sewage, water, and garbage. But in your world it's not important for this person not to pay for their service and then cost the local city government even more expenses...

And then you bitch about how the city is providing less.

maybe cities should set up a work program so some can work off some of their city bills. I'm always seeing local stories of people complaining that the city is allowing lots to become overgrown and filled with trash

The politicians in your local governments, just like in the federal government, have driven the city into bankruptcy. These extremes you're seeing now, such as losing a home due to a utility bill, are the result of mismanagement and corruption at the local, state, and federal levels of government. They are the real reasons people are subjected to such absurd collections.

Beyond all that, to actually agree with someone losing a home over a $400 bill is horrible and makes you the dick you've already made yourself out to be in this thread.

At a time when 1 in 7 Americans is receiving food stamps the idea that someone can lose their home over $400. is kind of absurd. There are way to many organizations, church charities, etc to allow this to happen. The old lady must have been ignoring a shit load of communications asking for a resolution of the problem.

I think you guys are getting sidetracked from the original post.
Yes, millions of people game the system.

That's what happens when you have a govt. handout (or any kind of handout)...people will take full advantage of it.

But my feeling is that when this country was founded there were certain ideals. One of them was a man's right to live his life unencumbered by the govt.

Of course the govt. has slowly over time written laws to change that. Hell, they even ammended the constitution in 1913 (the sixteenth ammendment) to give themselves the right to tax us on our income!!!

NEVER owning your own land and property (because of property tax) is one of those things that to me is outrageous

My belief is that if Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were somehow brought to the present in some time machine...they would start hanging politicians from the nearest tree.

I think the slippery slope begins with believing what you read on GFY is the whole story. No one is losing their home over a utility bill.
