Blog empire guys - How do you update WP across all of your 100s or 1000s of blogs?

Is there a plug/tool that will tell all of your blogs to update whenever WP comes out with a new update, or are you painfully updating them all by hand?

infinitewp.com (free), assuming you will install it on your same server where your blogs are, the problem is when your server is down.

managewp.com (paid) (small fee), But you can still work backup them and move them.

If you order xMarks, which is what I suggest use the coupon code: bfb for $25 off, but that coupon expires on the 17th of this month.

DWB, We do it by hand. If the widgets you are using are all different on the blogs not all may work with the new update. If you are cookie cutting one template/widget setup across all blogs with exact same tools you may be okay to automate. You still have to check to make sure the widgets you are using have been updated or deemed compatible by the creators. Otherwise its Las Vegas time.

it's clearly the title of a powerpoint slide shown to a roomful of executives sitting on leather chairs.

the purpose of the slide is to convince the executives that to be cool in those modern internets you need to increase 3000% your yearly "digital agency" budget.

the budget will be used for an off-the-shelf WP installation that takes about 120 seconds for any retarded 14yo.

bet it still happening somewhere.

All of these 'tools' seem to create a single panel which allows you to update your blogs. It would be interesting to see someone go about this another way, make a tool which makes your blogs all use the same core files.

This way, you'd only have to update the 'core' and all your blogs would use the new updated files immediately.

Only problem is, as captain kawaii said, your themes would need to be updated before or immediately after upgrading to keep compatibility.

Managewp can be a great tool. I run 500+ blogs but not a huge fan of upgrading them.. I only update if there's a major security update. Why upgrade if the wp is not broken?

most security updates have to do with users who are administrator, odds are you dont go giving out admin access to everyone, in my case i just allow subscribers to register, which is done from the front end via ajax, and if they try and goto /wp-admin they just get redirected back to the site, so no user actually has access to the back end.

Can managewp be bad for SEO at all if trying to take that route?

Does it work on integration with existing/installed wp blogs and servers as well?

nothing to do with seo, it only connects to the server to upgrade thats all, it doesnt modify any of the code on your site.

Its amazing how a free CMS releasesd under a GPL license has bloat-wared itself out of the realm of usefullness for the average user. Its all cool if you're using Wordpress.com, but maintaining multiple WP blogs is more work than it needs to be - and more work than its worth.

All you plugin and theme developers do realize that Wordpress can shut down your business in the blink of an eye? Wordpress itself won't shut you down - until they sell it off to someone and retire - but you really no control over anything that you've created.

Quote:
There is some legal grey area regarding what is considered a derivative work, but we feel strongly that plugins and themes are derivative work and thus inherit the GPL license.
http://wordpress.org/about/license/

I understand that as meaning this: Everything that everyone has ever made to "enhance" Wordpress is open game, and free to use in any way I desire. Everything you've ever made for Wordpress inherits the GPL license. Of course, I cannot buy your software and redistribute it - that's just wrong. If I DO buy your product, though, it cannot be encrypted and it must include the source code - and I'm allowed to modify it in any way I can imagine.

Quote:
Some devices are designed to deny users access to install or run modified versions of the software inside them, although the manufacturer can do so. This is fundamentally incompatible with the aim of protecting users' freedom to change the software.
Wordpress itself breaks this rule - but updates are "optional" so its all good.

The brilliant minds behind Wordpress care as much about these rules as I care about the size of your shoes. They're too busy standing around and jerking off in each other's faces to worry about whether they provide a useable product or not.

When they finally decide that circle-jerking is old news and agree to sell the business to Yahoo (Yahoo will buy ANYTHING two years after its "Best Before Date" has come and gone...), well...

You're fucked.

I'd like to know about adding Links to the Links widget across multiple blogs. When I add a new blog, I have to manually add the link to my blog network on each site. Surely there's a better way?

Is that question directed to me, or everyone in general? Anyway, easily done with xMarkPro.

If wanted, visit online demo at http://demo.xmarkpro.com/, Wordpress->Manage Domain menu, type "test2" into that textbox, and manage test2.kiopa.com. On the next page, Blogroll tab and you can manage the links for that specific domain. Then same page, Clone Settings tab, and you can clone the links to multiple (or all) sites with one click.

add links on 1 site, and share that data between all the sites.
