Take a Minute and Think...What do you waste your money on?

I decided to take some time today and think about what I spend my money on. I can't believe that I've wasted so much money on things. I did a take in my closet alone and I've wasted so much over the years on sneakers/shoes, watches, t-shirts and shitty electronics that become obsolete. I no longer waste money on these items. Instead of buying 12 pairs of kicks a year and the accumulated 20 plus watches for a couple hundred each I could have had 1-2 nice ones that last forever.

Instead of buying the coolest next best thing in gadgets I could have had what I needed to make money with and then left more cash in the bank. Lesson of the week for me is this. Don't need a bunch of shit. Less is easier. And less is more. On that note, time to jump on ebay and put stuff up I guess.

My children's education. Lawyers. Book-keepers. Accountants. Somali terrorists posing as refugees... Servers (that would be last in the list)

Every cent I made up until last week goes to various levels of Canadian government, so technically I haven't spent a cent on anything yet.

Wait - I bought a couple of steaks, four racks of ribs, and fifteen Budweiser.

Cigarettes, alcohol, holidays, cars, clothes, shoes, concert tickets, going out, taxes... but I don't care. At least I don't have to waste my money on kids.

Several years ago I read this financial book and one of the tips the guys gives it to take 60 days and document every dollar you spend. Keep receipts and keep a log. If it is under a dollar, but you buy it every day or very often log it as well.

At the end of 60 days go back and look at where your money went. Separate it into two categories "must have to live" and "everything else." You will likely be surprised at how much money you spend on frivolous things.

I have a friend that was always bitching about being broke even though he has a good job. I suggested he do this and we come to find out that just in morning lattes and going out to lunch every day he was spending almost $400 a month just on that.

There's a difference between wasting money and spending money on your personal luxuries.

We make money to enjoy it. To live a better life. To take in the things that we want to take in.

I waste little money. I buy what I want, and it may seem frivolous to some, but it's what I want. And that's all that matters.

Oh, looking back it's painfully obvious - Cars.

When was I was twenty-four I bought a Mustang GT on credit that I couldn't afford, and at the same time I was trying to restore an older 67 Mustang Fastback on credit cards. WTF was I thinking?

When I started making good money in porn I was buying new cars - paying cash - every year, always a Mustang. When my wife needed something, same thing - dumping cash into a brand new car.

I'm done with new cars. I bought a 1990 truck with 160k miles on it thinking I would use it to occasional haul stuff and as a third car in case we needed it, and I'm having more fun driving a "rather average" truck than I do driving my brand new car. I'm already looking forward to my next purchase too - I'm thinking a 1980s Monte Carlo SS or a 1970s Camaro.

Why drop $60k cash for a car when I can buy an older car for $2k and drop $6k into making it brand new - and have fun doing it.

In the last year, probably jewelry. But it is a waste if it's profitable?

... eBay tends to get pretty addictive

I was gonna say Tim Horton's coffee - but we recently bought a Kourig brewer...and now we're saving a heap of dough makin' it at home instead. Helluva savings when you consider $1.80 for a lrg. Tim Horton cup...compared to 75-cents with the K-cups.

The wife roughly calculated we'd collectively save a grand or two each year (we're both avid coffee drinkers).

You only live once.

I'm sorry that some people are poor and suffer but that's no reason for me to hold back.

Pretty much everything we purchase that is not a Need is a waste of money.

It's not a case of being poor or "holding back" (at least for us) - it's simply waking up to the fact of saving money and re-allocating it elsewhere.

If time is money, I waste more on GFY than anything else.

I never quite understand the spending money on gadgets thing. I get all the cool gadgets I want at 85% off. I just get them six months after they come out, when my buddy buys the next fad and sells me his $400 thing for $60.

I spent just over $1000 on lunch for 3 people today, I would have been happy with a steak sandwich

It's all relative so I don't get too hung up on spending money on this or that, it's not as if you can take it with you when you die, might as well enjoy it while you're here.
