Several years ago I read this financial book and one of the tips the guys gives it to take 60 days and document every dollar you spend. Keep receipts and keep a log. If it is under a dollar, but you buy it every day or very often log it as well.
At the end of 60 days go back and look at where your money went. Separate it into two categories "must have to live" and "everything else." You will likely be surprised at how much money you spend on frivolous things.
I have a friend that was always bitching about being broke even though he has a good job. I suggested he do this and we come to find out that just in morning lattes and going out to lunch every day he was spending almost $400 a month just on that.
