No idea, only that it's high in the list. India is pretty high up there too?

Despite more than 30,000 international troops in the country, Afghanistan now produces 92 per cent of the world's opium, a United Nations report said Tuesday. -- 2007

I was watching a report on this last night, and they were trying to suggest that because we do use more prescription pain killers, it automatically means that we are a bunch of drug addicts. One doctor went so far as to ask, "when did the US become the most painful place in the world to live?" He suggested that doctors are over medicating.

They followed it up with some cop that had confiscated a prescription bottle of 50 pills, from a prescription of 60. The 50 were left overs that had not been used by the person prescribed to, and they were eventually stolen in a burglary, then recovered by the cop.

So, why were there 50 left over pills? It is simple. Today, insurance companies give much better deals on drugs if you have a 90 day script over a 3 day script. They practically give them away ($5 here) if you get the 90 gay script. Doctors are helping their patients get cheaper meds by prescribing more.

It skews the reality.

I always kept my leftovers, to save money and in case of a future emergency so that I didn't have to spend money on doctors, more prescriptions, etc...

That's a real good point. The last time I used painkillers was a few years ago when I broke a tooth. This happened on a Saturday morning and I went to an urgent treatment place where they gave me a 30 day supply. Of course I had the problem taken care of the next Tuesday morning, 3 days later. 27 day supply still in my bathroom.

I have in the past. The problem being that they were long "expired" by the time I need them again. It does not change the fact that we were given more than we need.

Nobody, and I do mean nobody, pops pills like americans. There was this show on National Geographic about how many brands of pain medication alone are available in the USA and when you compare this to other developed or undeveloped countries around the world it really gets ridiculous.

Not only do they pop copious amounts of pills but they are horribly over-priced compared to what you would pay in almost any other country.

Take for example 191-amino Growth Hormone. One IU (international unit) costs anywhere from 10-20$ in the USA. The exact same compound goes for 1$/IU in China and this is a "sucker" price that tourists pay.

Not really news, but it's good to see more people waking up to the reality of one of the reasons we're still there and never leaving.

Who are the doctors that prescribed 90 days of pain meds? Never heard of that. 30 day supply is usually the max.

With my insurance plan you get two retail fills of drugs for $4. After that it is considered maintenance and if you don't move it to 90 mail order you pay 50%. If you move it to mail order you get 90 days for $4. There are no such limits by them for controlled substances because doctors won't write for 90 days anyway.
