Switching webhosts...

If you got an active website with active members and you want to switch servers, how do you get around the domain name downtime that'll come with changing your nameservers?

dude, i don't think you're getting it.

when members try and access your site by it's domain name, it'll be down for 24-48 hrs.
i'm trying to find a way around that.

1. log into new host with ip and set up all your stuff

2. change nameserver on domain.

3. they will access the site on your old host and once it starts resolving to the new host, your stuff will already be set up.

Theres no downtime

so you're saying that while the domain name is in the process of being resolved to my new nameservers, it'll still point to my old nameservers?

Not only that but if you do everything in house that means you have data that needs to be exported. Which means you have to have the DB's closed off and shut down the old site during propagation. If don't have to worry about data, you can always just do a Meta refresh to your new IP.

it's pretty simple. you need to have both hosts operating while the dns progagation takes place. once everything is running off of your new host, you can kill the old one.

excellent... thanks everybody.

my understanding was that while the dns propagation was taking place, the domain name would be down completely.

the traffic will gradually shift away from your old host and to your new one - no downtime as long as you have working copies of your sites on both hosts while you wait for propagation to complete itself.

hmm...
complicated, but the best solution for dynamic sites:

1. Setup all the shit on the new server/IP
2. Have new DNS point to the new server/IP
3. Have old DNS point to the new server/IP
4. Make the modification to domain records, changing old DNS info to the new DNS info
5. When all the hits are already coming via the new DNS (48-72 hrs), take down the old server.

And if you're running off a database, transfer it to the new site, and connect the old site to the database on the new site, so that both sites are using the same info.

Runs slow on the disconnected site if it's not behind the same firewall, but it will work.

Make sure you give it a good 4 or 5 days before you kill the old site. Just because it resolves for you through your ISP, doesn't mean it's resolving for everyone else.
