Where to find a real decent programmer?

Those outsourcing sites like :
scriptlance
odesk
peopleperhour
and elance

are just throwing me Indians and I have been down that route many times with poor results.

You are going to have a hard time no matter where you go. It doesn't matter if it's a $1000.00 project, or a $10,000.00 project. Many are simply outsourced Indians, Paki, etc. with a U.S. or western based front man, or project manager.

Additionally, on any larger projects, you are going to have a hard time getting those guys to submit a detailed schedule to your RFP. Including payment milestones, completion dates (phase 1, phase 2, etc.). Where there is a clear understanding of the project, time lines, and commitment to completion. Very few will do this even on the large, ongoing, projects $10,000.00+.

You are going to literally have to go through a hundred 'bidders' to find a decent one or two.

best to get a recommendation from someone, chances of finding someone good by yourself are slim to none...

They do not do "one off" projects. See reply below.

thank you for the email.

Unfortunately we do not work on one off projects like this and for a project to be bid on i suggest you use odesk.

We prefer to develop long term relationships for continued development to make it more worth everybody's time and provide the best possible products rather than just write it and deliver it.

so thank you again but we will have to pass.
No offense to them. They apparently have a business model that works for them as a "team".

I must of got lucky as the work they did for me was indeed a "one off" but that was just after they started... maybe they are bigger now, but did excellent work

There's nothing wrong with oDesk. It's like any job market, you need to conduct interviews like a real businessman and look at their past work.

I have several programmers doing thousands of dollars of work a month, I've only had to let a few go. Most are outstanding.

quit picking the lowest bidder and start picking the bidder you think can actually get the job done well and on time. freelance sites are fine as long as your not a cheap skate, because they certainly are you get what you pay for kinds of sites.

I've had a run of bad luck with odesk lately but what i learned from it all is I never -ever- accept a bid that requires anything up front. I don't care if it's only a $5 job. Way way to many scammers on odesk now.

not that im picking the lowest bid on odesk each time, its that they are all from India or Pakistan. Not even good bids are coming through.

Well, maybe because 99,9% of the people on odesk & co want it as cheap as possible - and no US/EU programmer wants to / can compete with Indians ...

You can send me some project details or at least your rough requirements (which languages, etc.) by email, I can forward it to some programmers I know

That's the main problem. People wanting top rate jobs at rock bottom prices. Not possible.

My brother is very good. If you want a name contact me and I'll pass you over to him.

It's all down to price.

lol it is funny how those programmers one day become rich, and if you ask how, how do you think if you give your idea to someone who you never met in person and you dont know? one day the guy will tell you that your ideas are impossible to make but he will have them running already. have luck

I know a German PHP-programmer that is great! He's the best I've worked with in the last 10 years and I've been hiring programmers several times every month.

His prices are more than fair, he "repaired" a script for $10 when a site it scrapped changed their code. Most programmers seem to ask for a ridicules amount when you want them to do some extra work on a script they've made for you.

Amen!

Where are the good client's who can respect someone's experience, expertise and ADVICE?

I can't tell you how many "fix it" jobs I've gotten where the client hired the cheapest outfit promising the most... then blows through their budget, and ends up desperate for a real programmer to fix their mess. If someone promises to code a 20K project for $200, you can bet it's probably a scam.

Anyone with a text editor and html guide can call themselves a developer... that is not a developer, no matter how cheap they are.

You all want the best job for the lowest prices. Any programmer who offers his work under $30 an hour is not that good. Fixing a script for $10???

My offer stills stands, if you can find me a Senior-programmer, willing to work in-house in our Montreal office. I'm GIVING you a thousand bucks.
I can get you that if you are willing to go high enough on the salary.

this is very much not true. i know very very skilled people that get all of their work from freelancer.com and the likes. they are the ones that are usually at the top of the bidding spectrum, have 90%+ completion rates and usually arent bidding in the lower pay range jobs.

most good programmers i know want a pretty penny to come into an office. if you can work from home, pick your projects and hours while still keeping your head above water... why would you give that up for cheap?
