I did a little bit in federal person for something a little more series (counterfeiting), but anything less of that you should pay your taxes. This drug dealer I used to hang out with in New York said "Uncle Sam will let you do a lot of things, but he won't let you fuck with his money". Whether it's the letter of the law, or bullshit accusations allegations on GFY, it really comes down to "malice". Which is the knowing, willful intent, to defraud. Most of the time there is no actual malice involved.

Paying taxes is voluntary. The first time you volunteer you are in the system and therefore obligated from this point on. Owing isn't a crime, I don't think, they just eventually take your stuff if you make no effort to pay. Most people who owe are probably more or less broke and that's not a crime. The IRS is allowed to do things other creditors can't legally do, so owing them is a bad idea. For example, they can pull money right out of your bank account. It's just not as bad as trying to defraud them by filing a false return or hiding assets.

Though eventually they will LITERALLY pull out guns, and that's important to keep in mind. First they send you letters. Still refuse, they send a subpoena. If you still don't pay, they send the guys with guns in.

Why do I say that's important? Because when it comes to tax dollars, "we should support solar energy" really means "the government should take your money, at gunpoint if necessary, and give it to the guys who own Solyndra." The fact that taxes = taking someones paycheck, at gunpoint if they refuse, means we should be awefully careful what we have taxes for. I vote "no" on pretty much all local tax-supported spending because I don't think it's right to take someone's grocery money at gunpoint in order to subsidize ANY company, or do anything that isn't absolutely necessary for society to function.
