    pink slime...whats the big deal?

This movement against lean, finely textured beef is one of the biggest moron-a-thons of the decade. almost as dumb as invading Iraq.

first, the shit is safe to eat. its has been served to the public for years. Nobody even noticed. Nobody got sick, nobody dropped dead.

second, plenty of other processed meat products contain chemicals nobody ever heard of, & can't even say. preservatives, sweeteners, food colorings. Gummy bears contain carnauba wax, the same shit gearheads use to wax their cars.

american moms are raising the fattest children ever created on earth. 4 year old kids at the mall are eating french fries. Flaming hypocrisy.

This is all happening because the media calls it "pink slime." Compared to what most people eat, its probably health food.

The people are tired of big business trying to feed the world. We have too many people as it is. Starvation is the answer. Using chemistry to feed the world is not right. It should be survival of the fittest.

It's not so much the chemical additives as what the beef by-products they are dissolving in ammonia look like in their originals state. They would gag a maggot, and this is what is grossing people out.

Thanks to Facebook, people are seeing what has been safe to eat for years. Kinda like don't ask what is in the Gumbo in New Orleans...

Every one jumps on some bandwagon these days

Now the group going after the person who killed the black kid.

Looks like the lynching mobs are back for everything. I heard processing plants are closing now because of consumer out cry. Well, now they can bitch at higher prices when the cheap meat is gone.

i beg to differ. once the pentagon perfects AI, & builds a race of machines that wipes out the human race, forcing rebels underground, humans will have to rely on a synthetic goo created by monsanto to survive. I hear it tastes like runny eggs.

Just sounds like a horrible idea to me. If it raises the cost of a Whopper by a $1.50 to use meat not soaked in ammonia then so be it. I'm gonna take a wild guess it would taste better as well.

The reason some people are so up in arms about it is probably because most people never knew about it before. When they see the ugly truth about how their cheap burgers are made it probably makes them sick to their stomachs.
what you say is correct. But pink slime is just the tip of the iceberg if the public is going to suddenly worry about what they are eating. Some of what sells in the supermarket is completely synthetic. Enough so that a company named "whole foods" is carving out a niche in actual food.

it also makes no sense to reject pink slime & eat at mcdonalds.

McDonald's said they stopped buying beef with pink slime a couple of months ago, but fast food like McDonald's is still unhealthy, any way you look at it.

I'm glad that my local supermarkets will no longer carry pink slimed meat products. And good for someone calling it "pink slime" which is a proper name for what it is.

We knew decades ago that there was no part of a chicken called a "nugget". It's ground up carcass. bon appetite

Exactly. I vote with my wallet. I buy stuff that I like to eat and that I consider ok to eat. If other people want to eat stuff that I consider unhealthy, well that's their business. If a store or restaurant doesn't sell the stuff that I prefer to eat then I simply go elsewhere.

Problem with this stuff is there was no requirement to label a product as containing it. Therefore the consumer had/has no way to make that informed choice. Shady as fuck is a saying that could apply.

you can only select using the information you have at hand. fast food chains are not going to come out and say we use this stuff. apparently even some supermarket ground beef contains it, so how are you supposed to make an informed choice when consumers aren't being informed about what they are purchasing?

Well I'm not really all that stupid so not eating at a fast food chain isnt really all that hard to figure out. And when i buy my beef its either from the butcher or its whole pieces of meat not some mystery chop meat thats 70% Beef 30% fat. I buy nothing processed.

i like making my own burgers, i buy extra lean ground beef and have no idea if that stuff is in or not. do you have your own meat grinder or something or just don't eat that kind of stuff at all? i think the information should be mandatory so even the most dimwitted individual can see what they are purchasing is actually made of.

The problem isn't the lack of requirements to put certain information on the label. Some of the problem's are actually caused by the labeling requirements.

Let's say there are no requirements to label your product. If as a producer you want to convince potential customers to buy your product, a correct label makes perfect sense as a way to set your product apart from all others. Especially when people are worried about what they eat.

If as a consumer, you don't know what you are buying then simply don't buy it. We all have a personal responsibility to ourselves. If some people prefer "cheap and fast" over "more expensive and well informed", then that is their choice.

Personally, I don't buy meat at a supermarket, but a a couple of local butcher shops. People I know, people i have done business with for a very long time, people others have recommended to me etc.

If there are no labeling requirements and a producer does label his products but puts false information on his labels then that producer is committing an act of fraud and he can be sued for that.

The problem with the labeling requirements for food these days is that they allow producers to put incorrect information on the labels. Most big producers of food also have their lobbyists at work and laws an regulations aren't always what they pretend to be. Most food labeling regulations allow for a 0.5% margin of error. This means that some manufacturers can now legally put "0% of chemical XYZ" or "Chemical ABC free" on their labels even when they know the product contains 0.4% or 0.3% or 0.4999% of those chemicals.

Maybe, but without proper and thorough labeling, you still don't know where your meat comes from. You don't know if it has been injected with growth hormones (and if so, which ones, and how much). You don't know what that meat was fed. You don't know what antibiotics it was given (and which ones and how much).

Almost none of our foods are labeled to let us know if genetically modified ingredients are present for example. Now it turns out that much of the food at Whole Foods are now genetically modified too!

yes, if you buy your meat from a place where you dont know where it comes from. Something I do not and educated myself on...Its pretty well known theres too many people in this world and not enough food to feed them. So the only way is with science.

I'd always wondered why the 90/10 ground beef (thats what the label says) was more fatty than the 80/20 ground beef from the other supermarket. Maybe pink slime was the reason. Luckily I dont eat fast food or 12+ yrs now and only get beef once every few months and stretch it out lightly. But STILL..

It's like them pretending that high fructose corn syrup is exactly the same as cane sugar. They are on a marketing campaign, even trying to re-brand it as "corn sugar" (which is the name of a product that has existed for many decades by the way). They use girl-next-door acrtresses standing near sunny corn fields smiling happily while telling you your body can't tell the difference. Bull.

As I say in grumpy old man mode more than once, the FDA is the place you go to get your approved sticker from a corporate point of view. From a consumer point of view? It's your vanishing safety watch dog with one blind eye and one crossed eye.

It's also been true forever that any product containing 2 or fewer calories may legally label itself as zero calories. Thats not a problem with overly strict labeling req's, it's a problem with lobbying and greasing the palms.

We knew decades ago that there was no part of a chicken called a "nugget". It's ground up carcass. bon appetite

The great side benefit of this is without pink slime, the prices go up and people either pay the higher price or..god forbid...cut down on their beef consumption.

If people would cut their beef consumption down by 2-3 ounces per portion and add in some extra salad or veggies, they'd be healthier.

That's cute. You're one of those people who think Whole Foods is any different.

My ex used to work there. Majority of the shit is delivered by the same suppliers who then goes to the grocery store across the street to make the same exact delivery. Only difference is the grocery store will sell it for less.

Whole Foods is very good at carrying a few good things and bringing attention to them.

Like they do with their "local farm" stuff. They'll order one pallet of vegetables from a local farm and then hang a sign that tricks consumers into believing it is the entire vegetable section. The rest of the stuff is the same fruits and vegetables bought from the same large corporate suppliers that you buy for less at a regular grocery store.

Most of the shit is the same as anywhere else. People become so fanatical about Whole Foods that they rarely go anywhere else to see how its really not all that different.

Marketing that is so good even seemingly smart people fall for it.

Even the manufacturers got smart and figured that you can sell the same shit with different packaging for stores like Whole Food and charge more. They used to manufacture brand and generic. Now they do brand, generic and premium. All the same stuff, just different packaging and price points.
