Justice Dept. Drafts Sweeping Expansion of Anti-Terrorism Act

The Bush Administration is preparing a bold, comprehensive sequel to the USA Patriot Act passed in the wake of September 11, 2001, which will give the government broad, sweeping new powers to increase domestic intelligence-gathering, surveillance and law enforcement prerogatives, and simultaneously decrease judicial review and public access to information.

Dr. David Cole, Georgetown University Law professor and author of Terrorism and the Constitution, reviewed the draft legislation at the request of the Center, and said that the legislation ?raises a lot of serious concerns. It?s troubling that they have gotten this far along and they?ve been telling people there is nothing in the works.? This proposed law, he added, ?would radically expand law enforcement and intelligence gathering authorities, reduce or eliminate judicial oversight over surveillance, authorize secret arrests, create a DNA database based on unchecked executive ?suspicion,? create new death penalties, and even seek to take American citizenship away from persons who belong to or support disfavored political groups For More information check out the Article published by the Center For Public Integrity http://www.publicintegrity.org/dtawe...L3=0&L4=0&L5=0 |

Very sad that we're loosing a lot of what made this country great.

I guess we'll be not much different than a euro-socialist country in a decade or so going at the rate we are now. This administration seems to want to strip away our civil liberties, and the ensuing democratic administration will most certainly begin attacking our 2nd Amendment rights again, all (most likely) in the name of terrorism again....or some other rediculous shit...

This sort of stuff isn't meant for law enforcement on a local level. It's for the CIA, FBI, etc... Mr. Policeman in your little town isn't going to suddenly have the power to do things he can't do as of now.

I don't give a shit who they give those rights to, I wouldn't give that levity to the Pope! LOL There is no such thing as 'kinda intrustive'....someone either gets that power or they don't....who gets it will be up for grabs...and of course will only hand it out to the feds 'at first', how long do you think it'll take until someone else get it? say at 'state level'...etc, etc etc

Its kinda funny how Bush gets up on some speach and always says America is fighting to preserve freedom, when the reality is that America has become one of the least free countries in the world.

It's not long now until I hear that the government is going to be monitoring every citizen to make sure they wipe their ass the proper way.

Maybe, it's just me...but the attorney general looks a lot like William Davis (the guy who played the smoking man in the x-files).
