10 more years...

Are the young people of America really going to accept another decade in Afghanistan?

Rachel Madow has a book out right now that makes a very good point. I haven't read he book but she was on the The Daily Show talking about it. She says that the reason the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have gone on so long is because the American people are disconnected from them and I agree.

.5% of the population serves in our military so they and their families are really the only ones suffering for these wars. In WW2 just about everyone sacrificed in one way or another. They either had a family member or a close friend fighting in the war. They rationed many things from sugar to gas to building materials. They shut down Major League Baseball. Every night on the radio they gave news of war. The people were involved and they were on the government's ass to end it. In Vietnam there was a draft and major news coverage and people were on the governments ass to end it.

Now there is none of that. A small group of soldiers do all the fighting. Not only are we not asked to sacrifice anything for them, there was a tax cut given so we are actually asked to give less. You rarely hear anything on the news about it. We are completely disconnected from it. It is someone else's problem.

If they announced tomorrow that they were adding a 3% war tax to everyone's paycheck and they were starting draft I would bet the war would be over in no time. This November pretty much anyone who didn't want to get us out of there ASAP would be voted out of office.

It's her politcally correct way of saying that in less than 3 generations the population has evolved into a slice of lemmings.

During that time period it made some sense. With the nuclear chess game that went on with the Soviets for 50 years it was justified to be ready and close to the potential threat.

Today, it makes no sense at all to me to keep troops there for another decade.

However,my original post was more about the apathy that exists today. You were around in the 70's. The north Vietnamese didn't beat the US army. The American university system did.

Institute a draft and we will be out of there within a week.

The government is abusing a tiny part of the population and the rest of the population is too scared of losing their jobs or their homes to care much about the fraction doing all the heavy lifting in these overseas wars of choice. Students these days are protesting the fact that their tuition is rising at an unprecedented pace while their employment opportunities continue to shrink. Since they aren't being drafted, that matters much more to them than any war a world away ever would.

You make a good point. Back in those days, waiting for your number to come up in the draft lottery was not that much fun.

Unfortunately, things have reached a point where much of today's youth has a distinct sense of entitlement, coupled with a "never at fault" mentality.

And they all cheat in school too.

That had to have been the Occupy movement. Now that the weather is warming up they are back. Serious conviction...

The effect on our day to day is too small. To hear people say we need to beef up the military etc is insane. We need to end the war now and leave and then shut down about half the armed forces.

Before he was elected, Obama said over and over that he would pull troops out of Iraq and put more into Afghanistan.

How long is it supposed to take I wonder? I guess 10 yrs on paper. Sucks for the troops.. they are the ones who need a conversation about them. They come home and are cut off from medicines and get denied coverages. They suicide and homicide at increased rates.. What a bunch of bullshit how they get treated.

Read a copy of the agreement ...

Quote:
The agreement, which takes effect when U.S. and other foreign combat forces leave in 2014, also is not the last word on whether the United States leaves a much smaller contingent of troops in Afghanistan after that date.

The agreement also sets in writing previous assurances from U.S. leaders that the United States will not build permanent military bases in Afghanistan or use its soil to launch hostile attacks on its neighbors. That does not preclude U.S. military and intelligence units from sharing space at Afghan bases, but if honored would prevent the United States from launching any future strike on Iran from inside Afghanistan.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politi...KxT_story.html
We are still pulling most of the troops out but its cheaper to aid the Afghan government to police their own nation -- if they can live up to their end of the agreement.

Starbucks, Apple, Facebook, High-fructose corn syrup, afraid to get their hands dirty, and so on. You get the idea.

But the main reason is the media. The day they stopped showing the real horrors of war on the news, dead Americans and all, was the day that people mostly let war slide. You can bet your ass that if we all had to see dead people, dead kids, dead women, and dead Americans every night on TV, lots of people would be protesting in the streets day and night. But when you hide the real horrors of war, it's easier to do your protesting on Facebook or the designated protest zones the government set up.

No one these days knows what war really looks like, other than those who have been there.

The US military is like herpes. Once they get on a country, you can't get rid of them.

Won't last forever. History has taught us that much. Sooner or later this empire will be replaced with another one. Russia or China probably.

And it will be in large part because of our govt. needing to try and control the world. We are spending way too much money, time, and young men's lives on occupying over 200 countries around the world.

Meanwhile...at home...we have more of our citizens imprisoned than ANY country in the world.

Right now we have been in the drivers seat for a long time. But when we finally run out of money and lose it all...history will not be kind to what our govt. has done in the last 70 years I'm afraid.

I don't thing that young people -anywhere - give a fuck. They're too busy plastering their tits and asses all over Youtube and Facebook.

Ten years ago, maybe they pay attention. Today, the internet - and all these laughable phones and tablets - are the perfect distraction from reality.

Why would kids care? As long as mommy and daddy can pay for their insane phone plans, everything's cool!

Older generations still rule in power. Younger generations communicate differently with technology. This type of communication has not been taken serious as of yet, hence the lack of effect it has taken. I don't think too many politicians give a fuck about 25,000 facebook petitioners, but they may care about 200 people physically standing in front of their office. It's perspective, and the older generation in power seem to have a lack of respect for the amount of voices trying to be heard by new technology. You can sense that tone / sarcasm in this thread alone.

.5% of the population serves in our military so they and their families are really the only ones suffering for these wars.

That is actually the way the government prefers it. That way the American people really do not get involved, and military industrial complex/big government can more a less do what it wants. If you passed a war tax, and forced everyone to be involved (i.e. draft) you would see a whole different ballgame. There would not be 10 year wars, and I can assure you there would be people voting people out of office, marches, and all the rest.

In the past, wars had to be paid for with taxes and sacrifice. If you did not have them, you could not AFFORD to go to war in the first place. The government learned their lesson, and want to keep people on the sidelines. They have hired mercenaries and outsourced the war more a less.

If this was all true, a president making a speech and telling the citizens we are going to be in Afghanistan for another 10 years wouldn't have happened.

Here's some good pictures from the Vietnam war era. These demonstrations didn't go on over a nice weekend in June in a small park in a few cities. They went on all over the country for years. And the politicians finally did get the message.

As there is today, there was a handful of people in power. And millions of people who demonstrated.

This topic needs a lot of research. They have their options. You're talking about what the young people of America will accept. Perhaps the young people don't know too much. You can think about life as a lifelong study of something complicated.

Also we have to take into consideration that many people have never even known any difference.

For instance....a 21 year old may have never even been on an airplane that they didn't have to be searched like a criminal before boarding it.

They've never had the freedom to be able to walk into a bar in most parts of the country and smoke a cigarette.

They've lived their entire adult lives with "The Patriot Act"

They've lived their adult lives with police having the right to search their vehicle and their person any time they want.

Our govt. finally figured out that you simply take people's personal liberty away under the guise of "security" and eventually the older generation dies out and there's nothing left but people who think this shit is "normal".
