				Who's gone Windows cold turkey?

I'm thinking about going all Linux Mint, and getting rid of the windows. They have everything I need, chrome/firefox, thunderbird, statsremote, netbeans, office, gimp(not the best) and video editors. I think I could realistically do this.

Hell there is even a program to control two pcs with one mouse keyboard! Anyone have any advice on making the convert?

		 Totally agree.

Everything was developed for Windows. Linux has a lot of shit you need to fuck with. Linux is good for web-servers and for admins/developers, Windows for ordinary uses. But it is just my opinion.

I dualboot, Win 7 and Linux Mint.

I've tried to go 100% Linux but there's apps and games for Win that doesn't run good under Linux. I always end up going back to Win.

I've been running Linux as my only desktop OS since 1998... Before that I had a Mac, so I've never actually ran Windows. Kind of weird.

Nowadays I stick with Ubuntu mostly for the installer and the hardware detection. |

After using Ubuntu and Mint, I'm a huge mint fan. That is the same reasons I want to switch. And to dev as well. I can always reboot for photoshop.

As far as advice for the OP, you said your Linux system does everything you need, right? Well there you go. If you have any problems or questions related to Linux let us know. I guess the one piece of advice generally is something you've probably already figured out - don't overuse Wine. In fifteen years I've had occasion to use Wine maybe four times. Instead use native software. For example, people who know nothing about it might try to run MS Office using Wine or something. Better results come from using native software like OpenOffice, LibreOffice, or Abiword. |

Exactly that with most serious designers & pc users. Dual boot, using both, why not if both are available to use ![]() Any one know what program works best in Linux for video editing? |

Linux Ubuntu user since 2004ish, tried Linux Mint when it first came out as well...went back to Ubuntu.

I dumped windblows and NEVER looked back, no dual boot, no WINE. I want nothing to do with windows. There's also a lesser chance of getting trojans/viruses using Linux (notice I said LESSER CHANCE)...considering 90% of that shit is written to attack the high-tech, slow to catch up, copycat, swiss cheese OS, windblows. Yep, I'm biased, I shouldn't have to lock my PC down to barebones functionality as well as need to run damn-near EVERY piece of security software on the planet just to surf the web (using windblows of course). A substantially LESS amount of worry and dread when I use my PC since I made the leap to Linux (friends and family STILL complain about their PC issues, I ignore their pleas for help and tell them to switch to Linux). I call it "tough love" and those 'Help, my PC is broken" calls, emails and texts have pretty much stopped. Wah, wah, wah, mom, you should've stuck with Linux.

Well the caching bug introduced in IE 4 still hasn't been fixed. That's why jpegs still sometimes save as bmp and one reason IE seems slow - it doesn't cache right. Want 36,429 other examples? |

I use OSX because I need some apps that just aren't support on Linux. Plus Firefox/Chromium on linux sucks balls at supporting Thai fonts which I use frequently.

Linux desktop is way behind Windows or Mac desktops. Gimp sucks even only because of their PNG/JPG compression & image scaling algorithms - no comparison to Photoshop.

I always come back to Mac these days, after having used Windows since 3.1 and Linux since one of the earlier releases of Slackware.

Probably not. I don't do much dvd burning. I just downloaded the no-codec cd version and I'm about to try that.

Big fucking deal. I create lengthy 3d animations, composite with After Effects, edit and sound design them on Windows -- very well I might add. If I can do all of that without much technical hassle, your jpeg problem doesn't exactly sound like a problem.

Compare spending 20 hours to learn a better system (Linux) which will have FAR fewer problems once you know it, so maybe 50 hours over tne next five years. Do you invest for the long term, or focus on this week, or the crap you're accustomed to? |

And 16 years later they might fix their shit so your animation runs without pegging the CPU at 100%. You can do a lot of things on Windows. You can even do two or three things that actually work right.
