What a stupid idiot!

I put in an offer on a domain in sedo a few months ago and after much back and forth, I agreed on $1k - the seller agreed and accepted.

So I transfer the money to sedo's escrow 3 weeks ago. I start developing the graphics for the future site...

Then 2 weeks ago, I got an auto-mail from sedo saying:
Quote:
This domain will expire soon or has already expired. We are waiting for the seller to renew the registration before continuing with the transfer. You will then be notified about the next steps.
Then again a week ago the same.
Today, the domain expired.

Grrrrrr, now I have to go after it in the frikken nightmare of the aftermarket auctions...

What a complete tit - he just through away 1k for the sake of what, a $10 renewal fee

This sedo "legally binding agreement" bullshit, is just that. A frikken scam.

Why can't you email him and ask him to renew it? That way you don't have to be at the mercy of the aftermarket?

Even if you don't get it on the aftermarket, whoever picks it up will likely flip it to you for less than 1K in quick profits. So, it may turn out to be a discount for you in the end.

well he got the same email from sedo too saying the money is in escrow but he has to renew first...

I'll try bag it on the aftermarket though - those auctions don't go sky high for this kind of domain, so I may well get it for a bargain...

backorder it on Snapnames.com Namejet.com and Pool.com they are the largest registrar "Pools". If the domain is semi-valuable and ends up on their internal auction you will probably get it for a low 200-300$ because all the domainers are broke and will not invest more than 100-200$ max.

Now is a good time to pick up deleted domains if you know what to do with them.

Also first log in to Namjet.com and find out exactly when the domain deletes. Do not order if a few days upfront because the squatters may pick up on it, find out the exact time the domain deletes and when the last moment to back order it is, you can do this on Namejet.com. Then you should back order it maybe 20-30min before the last minute. This way it will not be displayed for days as "backordered" because other domainers may see you having an interest in it. Do this with all the other services as well and you have a 99% of grabbing the domain.

Don't forget it might not drop. It might go to the registrars auction. Check which registrar and see if they run auctions.

yup, it's a godaddy domain, so I already registered their backorder service on it before the excellent advice of crucifissio

Just to add:

FYI godaddy.com has 10x less registrar power than any of these: Snapnames.com Namejet.com or Pool.com

Backordering with just Godaddy.com will give you only minimal chances of domain acquisition. To paint a clearer pictue there are roughly 900 registrars and godaddy.com has approx 10 or less. Your chances just with Godaddy.com are 90/1 against you. Each single registrar has the same chance of picking up a deleted domain.

Snapnames/Namejet/Pool have a combined registrar power of say 500+ registrars so your chances are much greater. Plus registrars outside of Snap/Namejet/Pool do not usually offer back-ordering services, so your chances are even higher

Why is this info important?

Well there are gems of domains dropping because parking just got non-profitable and the squatters are releasing domains like crazy (at least for my mainstream niches). You can find really valuable domain names dropping and if you use the combined registrar power above and keep in mind that squatters have never been broke-er you can really pick up some niiiiice domains for little money this way.

I think the members of GFY should control the interwebs. Honestly, where else under one roof can you find experts on just about anything internet-related.
OK, you got the wannabes who just blurt shit out they find on Google, but you can tell those that speak knowledge.
I've got no idea what crucifissio is on about cos this isn't my forté, but I just know I;d be nuts not to listen to his advice

OK, so I'm gonna register with the big guys in dropped names and put an offer in just before backordering ends...
If I get this for <$100 I'm buying everyone in this thread a drink

Did the domain just pass the expiration date? If so, then I'm sure the owner can renew it within the grace period and complete the sale.

Also...

When Snap/Namejet/Pool actually catch the domain, if it has any value at all or other bidders for the same domain name it will end up in a private auction. This means everybody who placed an offer, including you, will get to bid. DO NOT bid first. Find out when the auction ends exactly! Usually its 3 days time. Wait until the very last minute!!!! and then raise the bid.

Why?

Because the moment you raise the bid all the other bidders will be notified! You do not want to give them 2 days time to contemplate. You want to wait until the last minute of the auction and then you place your bid. The auction will be extended for another 5 min and in these 5minutes if nobody raises the price, and they usually do not, then the domain is yours.

Bidding early on a domain, or leaving a proxy bid will encourage others to bid for no reasons that I can logically explain, it just happens.

If at godaddy it will go to auction before it drops. I don't believe the BO service notifies you of this.

crucisiffisio isn't completely wrong with most of what he's saying except that in my experience if the name is registered with GoDaddy it will be offered through their auction service before it ever gets the chance to drop. Snapnames/Namejet, etc.. aren't going to beat that.

Here is a tip. Want to save a shitload on domains? Become a re seller. I pay far less than the coupon prices registrars have.
