How do you stop new windshield wipers from squeaking?

Just got back from a 400 mile round trip, in light rain... Had new wipers put on the other day, and even after a 5 hour trip, they are still 'squeaking'?

Any hints or tips? I can still hear the fuckers now, and I have been out of the car for an hour and a half! |

Thanks, but any 'Home Made' ideas? I'm not playing the 'I cant afford' card, but the nearest auto store is in the next town - Not worth a journey in itself...

How old are they? Might be time to replace them. I recently had to and problem went away.

I've had this problem before. The installers may have set the pressure (as in torque, sort of) of the wipers on your windshield a bit too high as well. In other words they are pressing on your window too hard which can be causing the squeak. You might want to loosen them, there should be a little knobby thing or some visible way to adjust them.

Only "cheap" wipers squeak ... and there is nothing short of replacing them that is going to solve this ...

Premium windshield wipers are impregnated with either Teflon or graphite, and will NEVER squeak when rubbing against the glass. Silicon spray or WD-40 should NEVER be applied to the wipers or the windshield, as they will create an oily film that will attract debris, and smudge your windshield. |

Take some fine grit sand paper and lightly wipe it across the rubber edge. That will slightly take off the oxidized "skin" of the rubber right on the edge.

I also noticed my wipers squeak if it's barely sprinkling and I have them on too high. The intermittent setting helps, so the windshield is a bit wet when the wipers run. The rainwater lubricates the surface. Set too fast when it's barely raining, the wiper is skidding across a dry windshield.

Use WD 40 or Vegetable oil and you wont even need windshield wipers, or lotion for that matter.

Let me know if that works. Knowing what you like, I for an answer from your favorite source - I pulled that out of my ass. Seriously now that I think about it, the fine sandpaper is for old wiper blades. Wouldn't hurt to try it, though.

No, because if there was no water on the window, then I wouldn't be using them would I ! Thats Not a 'clever cunt' answer, but come on...

I drove in mild to medium rain. Sometimes I just had them on 'intermittent' setting - Other times, on 'normal wipe speed' setting - as was appropriate for the road / weather / rain at the time... I would have thought that after 5 hours use, they would have lost the 'New Wiper' squeak... But thats not the case - Hence why I'm shooting the shit about it at GFY |

The soap trick normally works. Dont ever put anything petroleum or oil based on your wipers.

I use a drop or two of concentrated dishwashing liquid on a bit of damp paper towel, rub it over the windscreen to lather it up a bit, then run the wipers. Best done when it's raining so it washes off properly. |

I've had RainX and other brand wipers, and they all seem to squeak and leave streaks.

I was asking the guy at AutoZone about wipers and he recommended the AutoZone brand wipers. I was semi-skeptical, but at $9 each I gave them a shot. They don't streak, and they don't make much noise at all.

Most new wipers have a small alcohol pad in the package. It should be used on the "blade" of the wiper to clean all the crap off of the rubber from when it was made.

If you had them installed this probably got tossed instead of used. Try some rubbing alcohol on a rag and clean along the length of the blade.
